William & Mary 77, Delaware 68
William & Mary extended its winning streak to six games, outlasting Delaware, 77-68, at the Bob Carpenter Center.
William & Mary (14-5, 6-0 CAA) improved to 6-0 in CAA, the program’s best start to conference play since opening 9-0 in 1982-83, the first year of the CAA.
Nathan Knight produced his fifth-straight double-double and nation-leading 15
th on the year with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Miguel Ayesa came off the bench to record a career-best 14 points on a 5-of-5 shooting effort, including four 3-pointers.
After taking a 39-33 lead into the locker room, William & Mary withstood several (Delaware 12-7, 2-4 CAA) runs in the second half, beginning with the Blue Hens’ 5-0 spurt to open the half.
However, after William & Mary pushed its lead back to six, 44-38, on a long 3-pointer from Thornton Scott, Delaware would not have another chance to tie or take the lead.
Kevin Anderson paced Delaware with 25 points, while Ryan Allen added 17 and Nate Darling 13.
Hofstra 63, UNCW 61
Hofstra moved into second place in the CAA after holding on for a 63-61 win over UNCW at Trask Coliseum.
In a game that featured 10 lead changes and nine ties, it was Isaac Kante’s layup with five seconds to play that proved the difference.
The win in the final seconds was the second straight for Hofstra (14-5, 5-1, CAA), which moved to 4-0 in CAA road games.
Shykeim Phillips’ 3-pointer gave UNCW (5-15, 0-7 CAA) a 57-54 lead with 6:29 to play, but Tareq Coburn’s triple tied the game just over two minutes later. From there, Hofstra would take the lead on three occasions, with the Seahawks tying twice before being unable to do so in the final seconds.
Coburn led a balanced Hofstra offense with 15 points; Eli Pemberton added 14, while Desure Buie and Kante each chipped in 12.
Mike Okauru led UNCW with 17 points, while Phillips had 12.
Northeastern 79, Charleston 76
Northeastern overcame a 15-point deficit in the second half to pick up a key road win at Charleston, 79-76.
Northeastern (10-8, 4-2 CAA) trailed by 15, 55-40, with 16:15 to play after two Zep Jasper free throws, but whittled away at the lead behind Jordan Roland and Bolden Brace.
A jumper by Roland with 2:33 remaining brought the Huskies within three, 70-67, before Brace tied the game on the next Northeastern possession. Just 30 seconds after Brace tied the game, Roland put the Huskies ahead, 72-70, with 1:23 to play after a Guilien Smith steal keyed a fast break.
Grant Riller would tie the game for Charleston (11-8, 5-2 CAA) with 61 second to play, but Roland would answer once more, with a 3-pointer putting Northeastern ahead for good, 75-72.
Northeastern and Charleston would trade free throws and layups in the final 25 seconds, but Riller’s attempt at a game-tying 3-pointer was no good in the closing seconds.
Riller posted the first triple-double in Charleston history, finishing with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. The effort was the second triple-double recorded in the CAA this season and was the first in conference play since TJ Williams pulled off the effort for Northeastern against Elon on Feb. 23, 2017.
Roland led all scorers with 33 points, his fourth game this season with 30 or more points. Brace notched a double-double with 19 points and 11 boards.
Sam Miller chipped in 20 points for Charleston, while Jasper added 13.
Drexel 63, Elon 41
Drexel pulled away down the stretch to collect a 63-41 win over visiting Elon at the Daskalakis Athletics Center.
Camren Wynter led Drexel (11-8, 4-2 CAA) with 27 points, while James Butler posted his 12
th double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 boards.
Drexel trailed at the half, 21-20, but used a 13-3 run out of the break to assume a 33-23 lead. Wynter scored nine of Drexel’s points during the run, with Zach Walton adding four.
Elon (5-14, 1-5 CAA) would close within five, 41-36, on a Hunter McIntosh jumper with 6:38 to play, but Wynter would respond once more, back-cutting for a layup to push the Dragons’ edge back to seven on the ensuing possession.
The basket would spur an 11-0 Drexel run over the next three minutes, capped by a Butler dunk that made it 52-36 with 3:34 to play.
Elon was led by McIntosh’s 12 points, while Marcus Sheffield added 10. The Phoenix hit just four 3-pointers in the game after coming into the night averaging 10.5 per game.
