Delaware 76, Northeastern 74
Delaware overcame a 16-point deficit in the second half to stun Northeastern, 76-74, at Matthews Arena.
The win was the third straight for Delaware (15-7, 5-4 CAA), all coming by one or two points.
A Jordan Roland layup with 11:51 to play gave Northeastern (11-10, 5-4 CAA) a 58-42 lead, but set the stage for the Blue Hens’ comeback.
Jacob Cushing’s 3-pointer capped a 19-5 Delaware run over the next 4:38, bringing the Blue Hens within 63-61, but baskets by Max Boursiquot and Tyson Walker sandwiched a Nate Darling layup to keep the Huskies ahead, 67-65, with 4:23 remaining.
Two Kevin Anderson free throws tied the game at 67, while two more from Darling knotted the game at 69.
Darling would give the Blue Hens their first lead of the second half, splitting a pair of free throws to make it 74-73, with 1:27 to play.
Delaware would come up with three defensive stops over the final 87 seconds, with Darling adding two free throws with two seconds play.
Darling led all scorers with 34 points, going 11-of-19 from the field and adding nine free throws. Ryan Allen and Anderson each chipped in 12 for the Blue Hens.
Roland recorded his fifth straight game with 20 or more points, finishing with 27. Boursiquot added 18, while Tyson Walker finished with 11 for Northeastern, whose four losses in CAA play have come by a combined eight points.
UNCW 72, Charleston 70
Shykeim Phillips posted 17 points to lead UNCW to a 72-70 comeback win at Charleston on Saturday afternoon.
UNCW (7-15, 2-7 CAA) trailed, 36-32, at the half, but was spurred by Ty Gadsden, who scored all 16 of his points in the game’s final 20 minutes.
In a game that featured 11 lead changes and five ties, UNCW took the lead for good with 36 seconds to play on a pair of Jaylen Sims free throws that made it a 65-64 Seahawks’ edge.
After a Charleston (12-9, 6-3 CAA) miss on the other end, Sims would hit his first free throw before missing the second; however, Marten Linssen would tip out the miss and present another opportunity. Sims again split his pair, extending the lead to 67-64 with 17 seconds to play.
After Zep Jasper brought the Cougars within one, it was Gadsden’s turn to restore the 3-point lead as he knocked down both free throws. After Brevin Galloway hit 1-of-2 at the charity stripe, Gadsen pushed the UNCW lead to four, 71-67, with two more free throws.
Grant Riller would hit a 3-pointer with 2.0 seconds left to slice the gap to one point before Gadsden hit one more before Riller’s last-ditch effort came up short.
The win was the second straight for UNCW under interim head coach Rob Burke. Sims joined Phillips and Gadsden in double figures with 13 points.
Riller led Charleston with 16 points, while Galloway added 12. Both Jaylen McManus and DeAngelo Epps had 10 for the Cougars, which were held to 6-of-33 shooting from 3-point range.
Towson 70, William & Mary 58
Towson led wire-to-wire in collecting its sixth straight win, 70-58, over William & Mary at Kaplan Arena.
Towson (12-9, 6-3 CAA) closed the game on a 12-2 run after William & Mary (15-7, 7-2 CAA) closed within 58-56 after Nathan Knight’s 3-point play with 5:16 remaining.
After Brian Fobbs split a pair of free throws, the Tigers came away with steals on consecutive possessions and capitalized, pushing the lead to seven, 63-56, following a Fobbs steal and breakaway dunk with 3:37 to play.
The Tigers would go 7-of-8 from the line over the game’s final 1:13 to close out the win.
Towson raced out to an early lead behind Jason Gibson; the point guard scored 15 of his team-high 21 in the first half as the Tigers built a 39-35 halftime edge. Gibson was joined in double figures by Fobbs’ 17 and Allen Betrand’s 16 points.
Knight led William & Mary with 20 points, while Andy Van Vliet chipped in 10.
Hofstra 72, Drexel 59
Hofstra pulled away over the final 10 minutes, collecting a 72-59 win over Drexel on Saturday afternoon.
The win moved Hofstra (15-7, 6-3 CAA) into a 3-way tie for second place at the midway point of the conference season, while Drexel (12-10, 5-4 CAA) sits in a 3-way tie for fifth.
James Butler gave Drexel a 49-46 lead with 11:10 to play after a 3-point play, but Hofstra held the Dragons to 10 points the rest of the game.
The Pride would tie things up on the next possession on Tareq Coburn’s 3-pointer and would take the lead for good with Jalen Ray’s triple a possession later.
With Hofstra leading, 57-51, it was Coburn again from 3-point range, extending the edge to nine. Desure Buie would hit a jumper on the next Pride possession to make it 62-51 with 5:36 remaining.
Coburn led four Hofstra players in double figures with a game-high 24 points, adding 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Isaac Kante added 13, while Buie and Eli Pemberton each had 12.
Butler recorded his 14
th double-double of the season with 21 points and 12 rebounds for Drexel, while Zach Walton (14) and Cam Wynter (10) finished in double figures, as well.
Elon 82, James Madison 73
Elon raced out to a 15-point halftime lead and held off a furious James Madison rally to collect an 82-73 win at the Schar Center.
Marcus Sheffield II finished with 31 points for Elon (6-16, 2-7 CAA), which leap-frogged James Madison (8-12, 1-8 CAA) in the CAA standings.
With the game tied at 15 halfway through the first half, Elon would close the final 8:27 with a 24-9 burst, using a Hunter McIntosh 3-pointer as a springboard.
McIntosh would strike again to push the lead to 25-17 before Sheffield drained a 3-pointer to make it a 38-23 Elon lead with 2:08 to go in the half.
Matt Lewis would repeatedly try to bring James Madison back, but the Dukes could come no closer than eight points until 32 seconds remained in the game. Lewis would lead all scorers with 33 points, hitting 6-of-10 3-point attempts.
Julien Wooden added 10 points to join Lewis in double figures.
Hunter Woods (15) and McIntosh (12) rounded out the Elon trio in double figures, along with Sheffield. Woods recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds.
