RICHMOND, Va. (Nov. 30, 2020) – UNCW junior guard
Jaylen Sims has been named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Men’s Basketball Players of the Week, while William & Mary guard
Connor Kochera earned CAA Rookie of the Week accolades.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Jaylen Sims, UNCW
Junior | Guard | Charlotte, N.C./United Faith Christian
Sims led UNCW to the championship of the Mako Medical Asheville Classic, averaging 26.7 points and 6.7 rebounds across a 2-1 opening week for the Seahawks. Sims, who entered the season with a career high of 21 points, posted 27 in a season-opening loss versus Western Carolina before a 24-point effort in UNCW’s comeback win against UNC Asheville. The junior saved his best for last, recording a career-high 29 points, going 7-for-9 from the field in the Seahawks’ 23-point win against Troy. The junior played all but three minutes in the three games.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
Connor Kochera, William & Mary
Freshman | Guard | Arlington Heights, Ill./Saint Viator
In his first collegiate game, Kochera led William & Mary with 19 points, going 6-of-7 from 3-point range in the Tribe’s loss at Old Dominion. Kochera’s 19 points were the most by a Tribe player in his debut since Edwin Ofori Attah scored 22 in 2004. The freshman added three rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.
HONOR ROLL:
Matt Lewis, James Madison | Senior | Guard | Woodbridge, Va./Bishop O’Connell
Lewis posted a team-best 19.3 ppg as James Madison went 2-1 in the first week of the season. After a 27-point effort against Norfolk State, Lewis recorded his fourth career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Radford.
Zane Martin, Towson | Senior | Guard | Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti
In Towson’s three games in “Bubbleville,” Martin averaged 19.3 points, including two performances with 25 or more points. The senior recorded 25 to go along with five rebounds against San Francisco before a season-high 27 against Buffalo.
Hunter McIntosh, Elon | Sophomore | Guard | Snellville, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian School
McIntosh averaged 19.5 points as Elon opened its season with two wins. The sophomore hit five 3-pointers in both wins and had 21 points, including the game-winning free throws with 3.0 seconds left as the Phoenix defeated High Point, 76-75.
Jalen Ray, Hofstra | Senior | Guard | Hampton, Va./Hampton
Ray had a game-high 22 points in Hofstra’s season-opening setback at #24/23 Rutgers. With three 3-pointers in the contest, the senior moved into the top 10 in Hofstra history with 160 in his career.
Camren Wynter, Drexel | Junior | Guard | Hempstead, N.Y./DME (Fla.) Academy
Wynter led Drexel with 24 points in its season-opening loss at Pitt. The junior was 10-of-16 from the floor while handing out four assists and coming away with three steals.
