Charleston 68, William & Mary 50
With first place on the line in the CAA, Charleston outscored William & Mary, 26-7, over the final 13 minutes on its way to a 68-50 win over the visiting Tribe at TD Arena.
A 3-pointer by Luke Loewe would give William & Mary (16-9, 8-4 CAA) its final lead of the night, 43-42. Charleston (15-9, 9-3 CAA) would retake the lead on its next possession behind Brevin Galloway’s 3-point play, igniting a 15-4 push that was capped by Brenden Tucker’s 3-pointer with 7:11 remaining.
Galloway finished the night with a career-high 23 points, going 9-for-13 from the floor and adding four steals. Sam Miller added 13 points, while Grant Riller pushed his streak of games with 10 or more points to 52 with 10 points.
Galloway helped Charleston build a 35-28 halftime lead, scoring 12 of his points in the game’s first 20 minutes. The effort worked to offset the work done by Nathan Knight, who recorded his 19
th double-double of the season – the most in the NCAA – with 28 points and a career-best 18 rebounds.
Knight had a double-double in the first half alone, posting 17 points and 10 boards.
Delaware 84, Towson 78
Delaware won its fifth-straight game, leap-frogging Towson in the CAA standings with an 84-78 win at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware (17-7, 7-4 CAA) matched its win total from a season ago behind Nate Darling’s 34 points, the third time this season the junior has eclipsed 30 points. Darling was part of an early Delaware barrage from 3-point range, hitting 4-of-7 attempts in the first half as the Blue Hens built a 42-32 halftime lead.
Towson (13-11, 7-5 CAA) would steadily whittle away at the deficit, as Allen Betrand scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half. Betrand’s layup with 3:52 remaining brought the Tigers within 67-64, but Kevin Anderson pushed Delaware’s lead back to five points with a pair of free throws.
After a Delaware defensive stop, Darling would hit his seventh 3-pointer of the night to put the Blue Hens ahead, 72-64, with 1:38 to play.
Delaware would go 12-of-14 over the final 90 seconds to seal the result.
Darling led four Blue Hens in double figures and was joined by Ryan Allen (18), Dylan Painter (11) and Anderson (10).
Betrand matched his career high with 23 points for Towson, while Brian Fobbs added 19. Nick Timberlake came off the bench to record 11 points for the Tigers.
Elon 62, UNCW 56
Elon collected its first road win of the season, outlasting UNCW, 62-56, at Trask Coliseum.
Elon (8-17, 4-8 CAA) won its second straight game in CAA play, holding UNCW (7-18, 2-10 CAA) to 36.2-percent shooting.
Marcus Sheffield II was the lone Phoenix to finish in double figures, recording 18 points, including seven of Elon’s last 10 points.
After a Mike Okauru basket brought UNCW within 52-47 with 3:04 to play, Sheffield drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give Elon an 8-point lead. With 1:39 remaining, Sheffield’s jumper again pushed Elon’s advantage to eight.
Sheffield’s final basket came with 18 seconds remaining, making it a two-possession game, 61-56.
Ty Gadsden led UNCW with 15 points, while Okauru added 11.
Drexel 78, James Madison 67
Drexel never trailed as five Dragons finished in double figures in a 78-67 win over visiting James Madison on Thursday night.
Drexel (13-11, 6-5 CAA) improved to 10-2 at the DAC this season, while James Butler posted his 16
th double-double of the season with a team-high 18 points and 14 rebounds. Butler knocked down the first basket of the night as Drexel opened the game on a 13-1 run and never looked back.
Sam Green, Cam Wynter and Zach Walton all finished with 11 points for Drexel, while T.J. Bickerstaff came off the bench to finish with 10 points.
Deshon Parker paced James Madison (9-14, 2-10 CAA) with 23 points, while Matt Lewis chipped in 15 points. Drexel held JMU to 1-of-12 shooting from 3-point range.
