Delaware Falls to Top-Seeded Rutgers in NCAA Tournament

RICHMOND, Va. (Nov. 12, 2021) – The University of Delaware field hockey team fell to the No. 1 overall seed, Rutgers 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday.
The Scarlet Knights improve to 19-3 with the victory and advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament, awaiting the winner of Liberty and Saint Joseph’s. Delaware finishes the season 13-9 after the defeat.
Rutgers scored in the second and fourth quarters, while Delaware made things interesting by tacking on a goal late in the final period.
Liz Romano converted on a penalty corner try 18 minutes into the match to put Rutgers ahead 1-0. The Blue Hens fell behind 2-0 after Lucy Bannatyne scored her eighth goal of the season off a penalty corner in the 54
th minute.
Delaware put the pressure on late, recording three shots and two penalty corners in the last two minutes of the contest. Grace Hoepfner scored in the 59
th minute off a Julia Duffhuis assist, but the Blue Hens could not get a game-tying goal despite a corner opportunity with 12 seconds remaining.
Delaware held an 8-7 advantage on shots and held the upper hand 5-4 in shots on goal; however, Rutgers edged the Blue Hens 5-3 on penalty corners and scored both its goals off those opportunities.
