Hofstra, UNCW Collect Multiple Major Awards For 2021 Women's Soccer Season
Miles McQuiggan
RICHMOND, Va. (Nov. 3, 2021) – The top two seeds in this week’s Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Soccer Championship presented by Primis collected five of the six regular-season awards for the 2021 season, as Hofstra earned three honors and top-seeded UNCW was recognized with two.
Hofstra’s high-powered offense was recognized by the CAA coaches with
Miri Taylor earning CAA Attacking Player of the Year honors,
Lucy Porter being named CAA Midfielder of the Year, and
Georgia Brown collecting CAA Rookie of the Year accolades. UNCW freshman
Sophie Trepohl was named CAA Defensive Player of the Year and head coach
Chris Neal was chosen by his peers as CAA Coach of the Year. William & Mary’s
Zoe Doughty rounded out the honors with a selection as CAA Goalkeeper of the Year.
Taylor leads the CAA and ranks third nationally with 15 goals scored in 2021, while her 40 total points are good for second nationally. The 40 points recorded by Taylor this fall is tied for the highest total by a CAA player in the last 13 seasons. Taylor is the third-consecutive Hofstra player to win the award.
Porter is the CAA’s top player in assists with 11 this fall to go along with six goals. Of Porter’s 11 assists, nine came in the month of October, while five of six goals have been scored in the last three games entering Thursday’s CAA Semifinal. Porter has captured the award in all three years of its existence.
Trepohl is the second freshman in the last three years to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors. The Seahawks rank second in the CAA with a 0.894 goals-against average as a team and have shut out six opponents. Trepohl scored twice and added an assist in 12 games this fall. The freshman from Germany is the first UNCW player to win the award since it was instituted in 1998.
Doughty returned to the William & Mary lineup full-time on October 7 and was essential to keeping the Tribe in the tournament race up until the season’s final day. Her 0.38 goals-against average and .932 save percentage both would have led the nation had Doughty met the NCAA minimum number of games played. Doughty is the first William & Mary player to win Goalkeeper of the Year, which was added as an award in 2019.
Brown scored six goals and added an assist to help Hofstra to a second-place standing in the regular season. She was Rookie of the Week twice this fall, including an opening-weekend performance that included a brace in a 2-0 win at UAlbany in her second career game. Brown is Hofstra’s third Rookie of the Year in the last four seasons.
Neal collects his first CAA Coach of the Year honor and the fourth all-time by a UNCW head coach. The Seahawks finished atop the CAA at 7-2-0 and secured the No. 1 seed with a golden goal on the regular season’s final day. UNCW is 17-4-1 in the CAA regular season over the last three seasons and earned its first outright fall regular season championship Sunday.
Hofstra and UNCW led all teams with six All-CAA honorees each, while the Pride had a league-high four first-team recipients. James Madison and Towson followed with four selections each. UNCW’s three All-Rookie Team honorees were the most of any team; Charleston also earned multiple spots on the list.
The CAA Women’s Soccer Championship presented by Primis will begin Thursday in Elon, North Carolina. Top-seeded UNCW faces Northeastern at 4 p.m. with Hofstra and James Madison to follow at 7:30 p.m. Both Thursday semifinals and Sunday’s final can be seen on
