UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Nov. 21, 2021) – The Hofstra men’s soccer program set a record for goals in an NCAA Tournament game by a Colonial Athletic Association team and was one shy of the all-time NCAA Championship record with an 8-2 victory over No. 12 Penn State on Sunday night.

Hofstra won its nation-leading 18th game of the year, the highest total by a CAA team since William & Mary won 20 in 1996. Hendrik Hebbeker and Roc Carles scored twice each for the Pride, which also received tallies from Ryan Carmichael, Holger Maaloe, Francesco Perinelli, and Matthew Vowinkel.

The eight-goal eruption breaks Old Dominion’s record of six goals in a 2003 win over NC State for the highest single-game total by a CAA team in the NCAA Tournament. The six-goal differential was also the best by a CAA team in Tournament play.

Hofstra’s 24 points on goals and assists gives the Pride 168 points this fall, which is good for third in CAA history and four back of the 1992 James Madison team for second. Hofstra is the 15th team to advance to the third round or beyond while representing the CAA.

The NCAA single-game record of nine goals was achieved four times, most recently by Appalachian State in 1978.

The Pride will advance to face No. 5 national seed Pitt next weekend in Western Pennsylvania. Date, time, and broadcast information will be made available during the week.
