RICHMOND, Va. (Nov. 4, 2021) – The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) has announced year-end honors for the 2021 fall field hockey season. James Madison’s Eveline Zwager was selected as the CAA Player of the Year for the second consecutive season in a vote by the league’s seven head coaches.

Julia Duffhuis of Delaware was tabbed as the CAA Defensive Player of the Year, while Hofstra’s Eline Oldeman was named CAA Rookie of the Year. Christy Morgan of James Madison was honored by her peers as CAA Coach of the Year for the second year in a row.

Zwager is the third James Madison student-athlete to earn CAA Player of the Year honors in multiple seasons, and the first since Kelsey Cutchins did so in 2007-08. The Hardenberg, Netherlands native leads the CAA with 34 points and 14 goals this season. She ranks 11th in the nation in points per game (2.00) and 12th in goals per game (0.83). Zwager has scored multiple goals on four occasions this fall, including a career-high four-goal performance against Drexel, the highest individual goal and point total from a CAA student-athlete this season.

Duffhuis is the sixth straight major award winner for the Blue Hens but is the first CAA Defensive Player of the Year for Delaware since 2004. The sophomore defender leads Delaware with 27 points this season and ranks second in the CAA with 13 goals. She recorded goals in eight of her last ten games to end the year, leading Delaware to an 8-2 record in those contests. Duffhuis leads a backline that ranks second in the CAA in goals-against average (1.86) and posted four shutouts on the season.

Eline Oldeman becomes Hofstra’s second CAA Rookie of the Year, joining Simca Schoen as the only other major award winner in program history. The freshman forward leads all first-year players with 16 points and seven goals. She is the Pride’s leader in both statistical categories and ranks seventh in the CAA in goals per game (0.39).

Morgan earns back-to-back CAA Coach of the Year accolades, marking the sixth time she’s collected the honors during her tenure. Under Morgan’s direction, James Madison finished atop the CAA standings with a perfect 6-0 conference record. The Dukes have won 11 straight CAA regular-season matches dating back to last spring, and they have outscored conference opponents 39-9 during that stretch. Morgan has James Madison in the CAA Tournament for the eighth straight year, seeking the program’s fifth CAA Championship.

Delaware and James Madison had three student-athletes selected to the All-CAA First Team. Duffhuis was joined by her teammates Ashlyn Carr and Femke Strien, representing the Blue Hens. Caroline Cahill and Diede Remijnse accompanied Zwager from the Dukes. Northeastern had two players named to the All-CAA First Team, with Lexie Dunleavy and Lauren Rowe receiving recognition. Drexel’s Eline Di Leva, Towson’s Lena Vandam and Cara Menges of William & Mary filled out the remainder of the All-CAA First Team.

Overall, James Madison had the most student-athletes collect year-end accolades as eight individuals received recognition. Delaware followed with seven players honored, while Hofstra had six individuals acknowledged. Each program had at least two student-athletes recognized as All-CAA and all-rookie performers.
