Elon Sweeps CAA Women’s Cross Country Postseason Awards

RICHMOND, Va. (Dec. 2, 2021) – Elon University’s women’s cross country team swept the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) year-end honors following its third consecutive CAA cross country title this fall. It marks the second time in the past three seasons that the Phoenix has claimed the three major awards.
In a vote of the league’s head coaches,
Maria Ahm has been selected as the Women’s CAA Cross Country Runner of the Year, and
Jette Beermann has received Women’s CAA Cross Country Rookie of the Year accolades.
Kevin Jermyn has been tabbed as the Women’s CAA Coach of the Year by his peers.
Ahm earns CAA Runner of the Year accolades for the second consecutive season, marking the fourth straight Elon student-athlete to win the award. She led the Phoenix to its third straight CAA Championship title by winning the individual crown (21:26.2) for the second year in a row. The Holbæk, Denmark native became the first athlete to win back-to-back individual titles since 2012-13. Earlier this season, Ahm set a Phoenix program 5K record in her victory at the Firetower Project, covering the course in a time of 16:49.2. She concluded the year by finishing 30
th at the NCAA Southeast Regional with a time of 21:01.2. Ahm is the seventh athlete in league history to win women’s CAA Runner of the Year honors twice.
Beermann is the second CAA Rookie of the Year for Elon in the past three seasons after Ahm won the honors in 2019. The Rellingen, Germany native earned All-CAA honors and was the top finishing freshman at the CAA Championship, with a seventh-place finish (21:55.1). In her first NCAA Regional, she ran to a top 75 finish, placing 68
th (21:50.8) in the Southeast region. Beerman ran a season-best 21:28.4 in the 6K race at the FSU NCAA Pre-Nationals meet while earning a runner-up finish in the 5K at the Firetower Project (17:13.0).
Jermyn collects CAA Coach of the Year honors for the third time in as many seasons after guiding Elon to its third consecutive CAA team title. It is the fourth straight season that an Elon runner claimed the individual title, and the Phoenix placed three athletes in the top four at the CAA Championships. Overall, Elon had five runners receive All-CAA accolades, finishing in the top 14, the most of any team this season.
