CAA BASEBALL WEEKLY REPORT - MARCH 2
RICHMOND, Va. (March 2, 2021) – Elon sophomore outfielder
Anthony Galason was chosen as the CAA baseball Player of the Week, Hofstra graduate student right-hander
Jack Jett was selected as the CAA Pitcher of the Week and UNCW freshman pitcher
Hunter Hodges was named the CAA Rookie of the Week.
CAA Baseball Player of the Week
Anthony Galason, Elon – So., OF – Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck
Galason batted .389 (7-18) with two doubles, a homer and four RBI’s as Elon split four games last week. The sophomore hit .429 (6-14) as the Phoenix took two-of-three from VCU last weekend and delivered a pair of walk-off hits. He smacked a two-run homer in the ninth that gave Elon a 7-6 win in Saturday’s opener and followed with a RBI double in the 10
th to lift the Phoenix past the Rams 8-7 on Sunday.
CAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Jack Jett, Hofstra – Grad Student., RHP – Reedville, Va./Northumberland/ODU
Jett allowed just one hit over 8.0 shutout innings and recorded a career-high nine strikeouts in Hofstra’s 7-0 victory at La Salle last Saturday. The right-hander surrendered only an infield single in the sixth inning and that runner was quickly erased with a double play. For the season, Jett hasn’t given up an earned run in 13.1 innings of work.
CAA Baseball Rookie of the Week
Hunter Hodges, UNCW – Fr., RHP – Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover
In two appearances out of the bullpen against Western Carolina, Hodges gave up just one hit over 5.1 scoreless innings while striking out six. In Sunday’s series-clinching 10-6 victory, the freshman didn’t allow a hit and fanned three over the final 3.2 frames to earn his first win of the year. He also had a 1.2 shutout frames in Friday’s game with WCU.
Conference notes:
CHARLESTON (2-5, 0-0 CAA): The Cougars fell to Georgia Southern and were swept in a three-game series with USC Upstate last week. Joseph Merson continues to lead the Cougars in batting with a .435 average after three multi-hit games last week. Brody Hopkins was 2-for-5 with a 3-run homer vs. USC Upstate on Sunday. Ty Good and Trey Pooser combined to limit USC Upstate to one run on eight hits on Saturday with 11 strikeouts.
DELAWARE (0-0, 0-0 CAA): The Blue Hens open their season with a home-and-home weekend series against La Salle on March 6 and 7. Delaware heads to Philadelphia on Saturday and then hosts the Explorers on Sunday.
ELON (3-4, 0-0 CAA): The Phoenix split four games last week, losing 4-1 at North Carolina before taking two-of-three from VCU. Anthony Galason delivered walk-off hits in both victories over the Rams and leads Elon with eight RBI’s for the year. Garrett Stonehouse had at least one hit and one run in all three games of the VCU series. Joe Sprake picked up two wins in three relief appearances last week after allowing just one hit and no earned runs over 4.1 innings. Ben Simon held VCU to two runs on three hits over 6.2 innings.
HOFSTRA (4-2, 0-0 CAA): The Pride swept a doubleheader at La Salle last Friday and split a twinbill on Monday. Austin Gauthier batted .500 (6-12) with two doubles, a triple and two homers vs. the Explorers and is hitting .471 for the season. He has drawn 14 walks in six games. Brian Goulard drove in seven runs in the four games vs. La Salle. Jack Jett has yet to allow an earned run in 13.1 innings of work this season and has fanned nine. Mark Faello tossed 5.0 shutout innings last Friday.
JAMES MADISON (0-3, 0-0 CAA): The Dukes were off last weekend, but have their home opener this weekend as Bowling Green comes in for a three-game series. Carson Bell leads JMU with a .429 batting average and three RBI’s.
UNCW (5-1, 0-0 CAA): The Seahawks took two-of-three from Western Carolina last weekend. Brooks Baldwin was 5-for-13 with four runs scored vs. WCU and leads the team with seven RBI’s. Kip Brandenburg is on an 8-game hitting streak dating back to last year and tops UNCW with a .391 average. Matt Suggs hit .364 for the weekend with two doubles and a homer. UNCW pitchers have allowed just nine extra base hits in six games. Adam Smith improved to 2-0 after earning a win on Saturday after a three-inning relief outing.
NORTHEASTERN (1-2, 0-0 CAA): The Huskies had their scheduled series with Villanova and Maine fall through and were off last week. Northeastern is back in action with a home game against UMass on Wednesday before heading to Old Dominion for a three-game weekend series. Jared Dupere (.462) and Corey DiLoreto (.455) were NU’s top hitters in the opening series vs. Wake Forest.
TOWSON (1-6, 0-0 CAA): The Tigers battled well against a strong Winthrop team, winning 7-2 in the opener and going to extra innings in the series finale. Josh Seils scattered eight hits and gave up only an unearned run to get the win in the opener. Nolan Young delivered a three-run double in the victory and tops the Tigers with six RBI’s for the year. Jacob Terao and Brandon Austin each homered in a 5-4, 12-inning setback on Sunday.
WILLIAM & MARY (0-3, 0-0 CAA): The Tribe dropped all three games in their season-opening series at Charlotte. W&M struggled offensively, but got a three-run homer from Nic Britt in his first collegiate plate appearance. Tyler Solomon also homered on Sunday. Ben Greenspon didn’t allow an earned run in 4.0 innings of work in Game 2 of the series, and Matt Howat followed by striking out five over 2.2 frames.
