Jones' Late Goal Lifts Elon Over UNCW, 1-0, To Claim First CAA Women's Soccer Title

TOWSON, Md. (April 17, 2021) – Senior Carson Jones’ goal in the 82^nd minute lifted Elon to a 1-0 victory over UNCW to claim its first CAA Women’s Soccer Championship, presented by Primis, Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field on the campus of Towson University.

It was the fourth straight shutout win for the Phoenix (6-3), who earned the CAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship. UNCW, which reached the championship game for the first time since 2012, finished its season with a 7-3 mark.

Jones received a long pass into the box and had her initial shot attempt blocked by a UNCW defender. She retrieved the rebound, created space and slotted a 16-yard shot just inside the right post for her team-leading third goal of the year. Jones was named the Championship’s Most Outstanding Player.

Elon had a narrow 11-10 edge in shots but owned a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Elon freshman goalkeeper McKenna Dalfonso made two saves and earned her sixth shutout of the year, while UNCW keeper Blair Barefoot registered five stops.

Shots were 6-6 during an evenly played and scoreless opening half. Elon had the best opportunity in the 37^th minute when Beky Myers turned and fired a 10-yard shot from the left side of the box, but Barefoot stretched out to deflect the attempt away.

Barefoot came up big again in the 71^st minute when she was able to use her foot to block a shot from the middle of the box by Elon’s Claire Broderdop.

Jordan Faveri and Audrey Harding had three shots apiece for the Seahawks.

Jones was joined on the all-tournament team by Elon teammates Abby Fusca, Samantha Dominguez and Kayla Hodges. UNCW was represented by Morgan Nanni, Harding and Talia Parrous. Rounding out the team were Sabrina Bryan and Lucy Porter from Hofstra and Chelsea Domond and Alexis Legowki of Northeastern.
