			RICHMOND, Va. (May 14, 2021) – Four Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) women's lacrosse teams opened their pursuit for an NCAA DI Women's Lacrosse National Championship throughout the day Friday. James Madison defeated Johns Hopkins to advance to the second round while Drexel, Hofstra and Towson fell in their opening-round matchups.
 
James Madison 9, Johns Hopkins 6 | Box Score
James Madison's stifling defense held Johns Hopkins to just two first-half goals helping the Dukes to beat the Blue Jays 9-6 and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. James Madison jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind a pair of goals from Brittany Bill after Taylor Marchetti netted the opening goal of the game. The Dukes had a second 3-0 run during the first 30 minutes that gave James Madison a 6-1 lead in the contest before the Blue Jays tacked one goal just before the end of the half. The teams traded blows in the second half and James Madison was able to earn the victory. Between the pipes, Molly Dougherty recorded seven saves and posted a .538 save percentage. Offensively, the Dukes were paced by Charlotte Haggerty who netted a career-high four goals. Johns Hopkins had five different players net at least one goal led by Aurora Cordingley with two goals while also contributing a pair of assists. James Madison held a slight 10-7 edge on draw controls despite being outshot 16-13 on goal. James Madison improves to 12-4 this spring and advances to face top-seeded North Carolina in the second round on Sunday, May 16 at noon.
 
Hofstra 9, Loyola (Md.) 11 | Box Score
Hofstra fell in a game of runs 11-9 to Loyola (Md.) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Pride fell behind 2-0 in the first four minutes of the game before going on a 3-0 run of their own to gain a 3-2 advantage. The Greyhounds responded going on a 5-0 run over the final 12:35 of the first half to take a 7-3 lead into halftime. Hofstra's Alyssa Parrella ended the run 33 seconds into the second half with her second goal of the game. The teams traded blows before the Pride went on a 4-0 run to tie the game with five minutes remaining in the contest. On the run, four different athletes netted goals for the Pride. Loyola (Md.) stayed composed and scored twice in the final two minutes of the game to claim the victory and advance to the second round where they will face No. 3 Syracuse. Parrella led the Pride with five points on three goals and two assists. Katie Whelan also contributed four points for Hofstra on a pair of goals and two assists. For the Greyhounds, Elli Kluegel netted a game-high four goals while Livy Rosenzweig led the way with five points on one goal and four assists. Hofstra won the battle in the circle controlling 14 draws to just eight for the Greyhounds however, Loyola (Md.) caused nine turnovers in the game while the Pride only had four. Hofstra falls to 6-7 with the loss and Loyola (Md.) improves to 12-2 and extends their winning streak to 12 games.   
 
Drexel 13, Rutgers 16 | Box Score
Drexel dropped their NCAA Tournament opener to Rutgers 16-13. The Dragons were outscored 10-6 in the second half after taking a 7-6 advantage into the break. Out of halftime, the Scarlet Knights went on a 7-2 run over 18 minutes of actual game time to gain a 13-9 lead and seize control of the match. Drexel scored back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 13-11 but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way. Courtney Dietzel and Colleen Grady each recorded five points for the Dragons as Dietzel netted her second hat trick of the season and added a pair of assists while Grady scored one goal and had a game-high four assists. Karson Harris and Lucy Schneiderieth also netted hat tricks for the Dragons. Rutgers was led by Taralyn Naslonski who recorded a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists. Hannah Hollingsworth also netted four goals and added an assist for the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers controlled 19 draws to 12 for Drexel and they also outshot the Dragons 27-20 on goal. Drexel falls to 13-3 while Rutgers improves to 7-8 and advances to the second round for a matchup with eighth-seeded Stony Brook.  
 
Towson 8, No. 8 Stony Brook 14 | Box Score
Towson fell in their first-round matchup of the NCAA Tournament to eighth-seeded Stony Brook 14-8. The Seawolves used a 6-0 run during the final 8:57 of the first half and the first 8:43 of the second half to account for the difference in the game. Towson's Lindsey Marshall scored the opening goal of the game just one minute and 50 seconds into the contest; however, it would be the only lead of the game for the Tigers. After falling behind 1-0, Stony Brook responded with a 3-0 run to seize control and the Seawolves never looked back. Marshall led Towson with her third consecutive hat trick and also recorded a game-high eight draw controls. The Seawolves had three individuals tally hat tricks led by Taryn Ohmiller who recorded a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists. It was an even battle in the draw circle as both teams were able to collect 12 draws each; however, Stony Brook outshot Towson 26-15 on goal and scooped up 16 ground balls to nine for the Tigers. Towson falls to 9-9 after the setback while No. 8 Stony Brook improves to 15-2 on the season and advances to face Rutgers in the second round.
