CAA Baseball Player of the Week
Trevor Marsh, UNCW – R-Fr., OF – Asheboro, N.C./Asheboro
Marsh batted .545 (6-11) with two homers, four runs scored and seven RBI’s in UNCW’s three-game sweep of Charleston that clinched the CAA South Division. The redshirt freshman outfielder delivered a walk-off RBI single in the 9
th as the Seahawks rallied for a 7-6 victory on Saturday and followed with an 8
th-inning grand slam in a tie game on Sunday that gave UNCW an 8-4 win.
CAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Cam Schlittler, Northeastern – R-Fr., RHP – East Walpole, Mass./Walpole
Schlittler scattered eight hits over 8.0 scoreless innings and struck out 10 with no walks in Northeastern’s 8-1 triumph at Delaware last Friday. The right-hander fanned at least one batter in seven of eight frames and won his sixth consecutive game. For the season, Schlittler is 6-0 with a CAA-best 1.48 ERA.
CAA Baseball Rookie of the Week
Chase DeLauter, James Madison – R-Fr., OF/LHP – Martinsburg, W.Va./Hedgesville
DeLauter contributed with his bat and arm as James Madison took two-of-three from William & Mary last weekend. The redshirt freshman batted .583 (7-12) with four doubles, four runs scored and two RBI’s. He also walked four times for a .688 on base percentage. DeLauter threw the final 3.0 innings on Sunday and gave up two hits and no earned runs to earn his first collegiate win.
Conference notes:
NORTHEASTERN, UNCW CLINCH DIVISIONS: Northeastern has clinched the CAA North Division while UNCW has locked up the CAA South Division. The Huskies and Seahawks will be the top two seeds for the CAA Baseball Championship and receive first-round byes. NU set a conference record by starting CAA play 18-0, while UNCW closed conference play on an eight-game winning streak.
TOURNAMENT TIME APPROACHES: Half of the field is set for next week’s CAA Baseball Championship as the regular season comes to a close. Division champs Northeastern and UNCW will be joined by Towson, which earned a tournament berth for the first time since 2013. The winner of this weekend’s series between Elon and Charleston will also clinch a berth as the second-place team in the South. The final two spots in the tournament will be determined by a committee of athletic administrators on Saturday evening. The committee will also determine the seeds for the entire six-team field.

CHARLESTON (22-21, 11-10 CAA): The Cougars beat local rival The Citadel 6-3 last Tuesday, but were swept in a three-game CAA series at UNCW. Tanner Steffy had a solid week at the plate, batting .500 (7-14) with three RBI’s. Jared Kirven was 3-for-4 and drove in two on Sunday at UNCW, including an RBI double that put CofC up 4-2 in the sixth. Joseph Mershon had a hit in all four games, highlighted by a 3-for-5 outing on Saturday. Harrison Hawkins homered and drove in three on Saturday and is batting .443 with nine homers and 34 RBI’s over 21 CAA games. Landon Choboy is hitting .409 over the last 10 games. Zach Williams (2-0) got the win at The Citadel after holding the Bulldogs to two runs in 6.1 innings.
DELAWARE (12-22, 8-16 CAA): The Blue Hens captured the final two games of their series with first-place Northeastern, ending the Huskies’ 20-game win streak. Delaware rallied for four runs in the 7th to post a 5-3 victory in Saturday’s second game. Joey Loynd delivered a two-run single that broke a 3-3 tie after Jordan Hutchins homered and Jack Goan had an RBI double. Freshman Jake Dunion hit .529 (9-17) in the series, including going 3-for-5 with a homer in Sunday’s 9-7 win. Kyle Baker finished with a 15-game hitting streak after batting .375 with four RBI’s last week. Joey Silan threw 3.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn his first win of the season on Sunday.
ELON (19-19, 8-7 CAA): The Phoenix recorded a pair of quality wins over Georgia Southern in a three-game series. Outfielder Anthony Galason recorded multiple hits in all three games, batting .692 (9-13) with three runs scored and three RBI’s. He raised his season average to .328. Adam Spurlin homered twice and Elon also got long balls from Parker Haskin and Alex Iadisernia in Thursday’s 8-5 triumph. Spurlin also homered on Saturday and finished the series with five RBI’s. Joe Sprake saved both victories in the series vs. GSU, giving up just one hit over 2.1 innings. Sprake is now 6-0 with six saves and a 2.66 ERA for the season. Brian Edgington got the win on Thursday to even his record at 3-3 with a 3.57 ERA.
HOFSTRA (17-22, 8-16 CAA): The Pride had a 2-3 week, capped by a pair of victories in their final two games at Towson. Brian Goulard was 5-for-8 in the two wins, including the first multi-homer game of his career on Sunday. He had three HR’s and five RBI’s in the series. Anthony D’Onofrio hit .300 for the week and drove in four. Brad Camarda made two relief appearances and surrendered just one hit over 6.1 innings. Jack Jett (3-4) threw a complete game in Saturday’s 6-4 victory over Towson, giving up only four hits and striking out 11. He has 72 strikeouts in 57.2 innings. Jimmy Joyce fanned 12 over 7.1 innings in the series opener and now has 89 K’s in 73 innings. Mark Faello earned his first save on Sunday.
JAMES MADISON (11-15, 6-9 CAA): The Dukes won two-of-three from William & Mary over the weekend. JMU’s offense piled up 24 runs on 38 hits in the series. Carson Bell batted .545 (6-11) with seven RBI’s, highlighted by a 4-for-6 effort on Sunday where he became the first JMU player to hit for the cycle since 2013. Chase DeLauter hit .583 (7-12) with four doubles and a homer, while also walking four times for a .688 on base percentage. He also pitched the final 3.0 innings of Sunday’s 10-9 extra-inning triumph and earned his first collegiate win. Connor Hartigan had multiple hits in all three games and batted .500 vs. W&M with four RBI’s. Hartigan extended his hitting streak to 15 games, while DeLauter has a 14-game streak. Eli Ottinger fanned five in 2.2 innings of work on Saturday.
UNCW (29-17, 13-8 CAA): The Seahawks clinched the South Division with a three-game sweep of Charleston last weekend that ran their CAA winning streak to eight. Trevor Marsh hit .545 (6-11) in the series with two homers and seven RBI’s. He delivered a walk-off RBI single in Saturday’s 7-6 win and added a grand slam in the 8th on Sunday that snapped a 4-4 tie. Brooks Baldwin batted .500 (7-14) and scored four times, raising his average to .333. Matt Suggs had a hit in each game last week, including his 11th homer. Landen Roupp (6-4) scattered seven hits and struck out nine over 7.0 innings in a 7-2 victory last Friday. Adam Smith didn’t give up an earned run in 6.0 innings on Saturday, lowering his ERA to 1.79 for the season. Hunter Hodges has given up just three hits over his last six outings.
NORTHEASTERN (30-8, 18-2 CAA): The Huskies pushed their nation’s-best winning streak to 20 after beating Hofstra and taking the first two games at Delaware, but dropped the final two to the Blue Hens. NU won the opener at UD, 8-1, as Cam Schlittler improved to 6-0 and lowered his ERA to 1.48 after firing 8.0 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts. The Huskies set a program record for runs in a 26-4 triumph over the Hens on Saturday as 12 different players had at least one hit. Scott Holzwasser batted .450 for the week with a homer, six runs scored and seven RBI’s, and broke the school career record for runs scored with 165. Freshman Max Viera also had a big week, batting .364 with three doubles, a homer and eight RBI’s. Kyle Murphy also upped his record to 6-0 with a win last Saturday.
TOWSON (20-32, 10-10 CAA): The Tigers locked up a berth in the CAA Baseball Championship for the first time since 2013 after splitting their four-game series with Hofstra. Towson won Friday’s opener, 4-2, as Josh Seils threw his first career complete game, limiting the Pride to five hits and two runs while striking out seven. The Tigers clinched the tournament spot in Saturday’s opener after scoring seven times in the 8th for an 8-5 victory. Noah Cabrera’s grand slam put Towson on top and Burke Camper added a 2-run homer for insurance. Matt Watters got the win in the game after not allowing a hit over 3.2 innings of relief and fanning five. Freshman Danny Becerra had three doubles and three RBI’s vs. HU.
WILLIAM & MARY (13-27, 10-14 CAA): The Tribe dropped two-of-three at JMU last weekend, picking up a 7-4 win in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Third baseman Ben Williamson led W&M offensively, batting .400 (6-15) with two double, two homers, five runs scored and four RBI’s. He leads W&M in batting (.317) and runs (27) for the season. Matt McDermott had multiple hits in all three games vs. JMU, batting .412 (7-17) with four runs scored and three RBI’s. Tyler Solomon had five hits in the series, with three being doubles. Jacob Haney gave up just three hits over 5.0 scoreless innings of relief in the series opener and struck out four.
