RICHMOND, Va. (May 25, 2021) –  Northeastern sophomore outfielder Jared Dupere was selected as the 2021 CAA baseball Player of the Year, while UNCW junior right-hander Landen Roupp was chosen as the CAA Pitcher of the Year as the conference announced its post-season award winners on Tuesday.

Other top honors went to Elon freshman outfielder Alex Iadisernia and Northeastern freshman pitcher Cam Schlittler as CAA Co-Rookies of the Year, William & Mary senior shortstop Matt McDermott as CAA Defensive Player of the Year and Northeastern’s Mike Glavine as CAA Coach of the Year.

Dupere turned in a huge year offensively, leading the CAA in home runs (17), runs scored (50) and slugging percentage (.789). He was also among the league’s top 10 in RBI’s (42/2nd), stolen bases (13/5th), on-base percentage (.462/4th) and batting average (.355/6th).  The 17 homers are the second-most in school history and rank 9th nationally. He’s fourth in Division I in slugging and 15th in runs per game. Dupere is Northeastern’s second CAA Player of the Year honoree, joining Charlie McConnell, who received the award in 2017.

Roupp was the ace of a talented UNCW pitching staff, posting a 7-4 record with a 2.75 ERA. The right-hander topped the conference in strikeouts (97), wins (7) and innings pitched (88.1), and held opponents to a .206 batting average, which ranked fifth. The junior threw at least five innings in 12 of his 14 starts and limited foes to one earned run or less in nine of them. He was 4-1 with a 1.70 ERA in CAA play.

Iadisernia led Elon in nearly every offensive category. The freshman outfielder ranked fourth in the CAA with a .366 batting average and was also among the league’s top 10 in hits (59/3rd), runs (37/7th), homers (10/4th), doubles (12/5th), slugging percentage (.640/3rd) and on-base percentage (.449/7th). He closed the regular season on a 13-game hitting streak.

Schlittler was the top performer on a Northeastern pitching staff that ranks third nationally in ERA. The right-hander was a perfect 7-0 with a CAA-best 1.29 ERA that ranks second nationally. He recorded 74 strikeouts with just 16 walks over 63.0 innings and limited foes to a .200 batting average. Schlittler was 6-0 with a 0.90 ERA in six CAA starts.

McDermott had a tremendous year at shortstop, committing only three errors in 160 chances defensively for a .981 fielding percentage. The senior ranked fifth in the CAA with 105 assists and was part of 13 double plays for a William & Mary defense that ranked second in the league. Offensively, McDermott batted .287 and drove in a team-high 22 runs.

Glavine received Coach of the Year honors for the third time in the last four seasons after guiding Northeastern to a 32-9 overall record and a sparkling 20-3 mark in CAA play. The Huskies put together a program-record 20-game winning streak this season, which was the longest by any team in the nation, and their 18-0 conference start was the best in league history. Northeastern captured the North Division title and will be the top seed for the CAA Baseball Championship.

Division champions Northeastern and UNCW each had five players on the All-CAA first team. Joining Dupere and Schlittler from the Huskies were senior infielder Scott Holzwasser, freshman designated hitter Max Viera and senior pitcher Kyle Murphy. In addition to Roupp, sophomore catcher Matt Suggs, senior infielder Cole Weiss, sophomore outfielder Brooks Baldwin and freshman reliever Hunter Hodges represented the Seahawks.

Hofstra infielders Austin Gauthier and Rob Weissheier were selected to the first team along with infielder Ben Williamson and outfielder/pitcher Jack Cone of William & Mary. Elon’s Iadisernia was joined by sophomore reliever Joe Sprake. Rounding out the squad were James Madison freshman outfielder Chase DeLauter and Charleston senior outfielder Harrison Hawkins.

The 2021 CAA Baseball Championship gets underway on Wednesday from UNCW’s Brooks Field in Wilmington, N.C.  Six teams will battle for the league title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament in the double-elimination event.
