Reid Bowering’s Five Goals Lead Drexel to the 2021 CAA Championship

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (May 8, 2021) – 
Drexel opened the game on a 10-1 run on route to a 15-11 victory in the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Men’s Lacrosse Championship title game on Saturday afternoon at Shuart Stadium on the campus of Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York.

The Dragons, the second-seed in the championship and now 10-2 on the season, earn the CAA’s automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship. The selection show for NCAAs will be shown Sunday, May 9 at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.



Dragons senior midfielder Reid Bowering, scored three of his game-high five goals in the first nine minutes of the game, including the game’s first goal, unassisted, 1:52 into action. Bowering was named the Most Outstanding Player of the championship. His five goals are one off the CAA record for goals in a championship game. He also moved into ninth place in career goals in CAA history and he is the CAA’s all-time leader in assists.

Down 10-1 at the half and in a man-down position, Hofstra (8-6), the tournament’s fourth seed, came out hot in the second half, going on a 6-2 run in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 12-7 entering the fourth period. Hofstra would eventually cut the margin to just three goals, 14-11, with 1:13 remaining, but Drexel senior attackman Aidan Coll scored on a pass from junior defenseman Brennan Greenwald with :25 remaining to claim the 15-11 victory.

With Hofstra’s first goal on the game, 4:43 into the contest, redshirt senior attackman Ryan Tierney scored his 163 career goal, moving him into first place in career goals on the CAA all-time list. He already is the already the career points leader in the CAA.

Bowering led all scorers with five goals and Coll added three goals. Freshman attackman Luke Tomak had two goals and three assists and junior attackman Jack Mulcahy added two goals for the Dragons. Junior goalkeeper Ross Blumenthal recorded 11 saves in the crease for Drexel, including eight saves in the first half.

Sophomore attackman Ryan Sheridan led the Pride with three goals and an assist, while Tierney had two goals and an assist. Grad student attackman Justin Lynskey added two goals for Hofstra.

This marks Drexel’s second CAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship and first since 2014, when the Dragons defeated Hofstra 11-10 in three overtimes at Shuart Stadium. This marks the sixth time the second seed in the CAA Championship has won the title. The Dragons were the runner-up in the 2019 championship, the last one played prior to the COVID 19 pandemic cancelling the 2020 event.
