MINNEAPOLIS (July 30, 2021) - James Madison men's basketball guard Matt Lewis continued to add to his stellar career on Friday, signing a free agent deal with the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves.

Lewis is the first James Madison graduate to sign with an NBA team since Steve Hood was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in the second round of the 1991 NBA Draft.

After a stellar career at JMU, Lewis capped his time in Harrisonburg with his  best season yet, putting himself among the league's elite in nearly every statistical category. In addition to leading the CAA in scoring at a career-best 19.7 points per game, Lewis shot a remarkable 46.8% from the field, the third-highest clip among all eligible players in the league.

Lewis is the seventh CAA player to sign with or be drafted by an NBA team over the last three seasons. Charleston’s Jarrell Brantley and Hofstra’s Justin Wright-Foreman were selected in the 2019 NBA Draft with UNCW’s Devontae Cacok signing as a free agent following the draft. Charleston’s Grant Riller joined the group as a second-round NBA Draft pick in 2020 and Delaware's Nate Darling and William & Mary's Nathan Knight signed as free agents after that year's draft.
