CAA Football Weekly Awards - Sept. 20

RICHMOND, Va. (September 20, 2021) – CAA Football has announced its weekly award winners for Week 3 of the 2021 season. Rhode Island junior quarterback Kasim Hill and Villanova graduate quarterback Dan Smith shared Offensive Player of the Week honors, while William & Mary senior safety Gage Herdman was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week. Maine senior defensive back Rich Carr was chosen as the Special Teams Player of the Week and Stony Brook freshman linebacker Tyler King was named Rookie of the Week.
 
CAA Football Co-Offensive Player of the Week
Kasim Hill, Jr., QB, Rhode Island (Washington, D.C./St. John’s College)
 
Hill accounted for 351 yards of total offense and four touchdowns as Rhode Island defeated Brown, 45-24, to claim the Governor’s Cup for the third straight year. The junior was 13-of-19 passing for a career-high 320 yards and 3 TD’s and also ran for 31 yards and a score. Hill completed five passes of 35 yards or more to four different receivers as the Rams improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2005.
 
CAA Football Co-Offensive Player of the Week
Dan Smith, Gr., QB, Villanova (Leesburg, Va./Tuscarora)
 
Smith compiled 369 yards of total offense and four touchdowns as Villanova rallied for a 34-27 CAA victory over Richmond. The grad student led the Wildcats to 21 points over the final 5:01, scoring on a 2-yard run before firing a game-tying 44-yard TD pass with 2:02 remaining and a game-winning 47-yard TD strike with 38 seconds left. He finished 26-of-40 through the air for 350 yards as VU moved to 3-0.
 
CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week
Gage Herdman, Sr., S, William & Mary (Leesburg, Va./Flint Hill)
 
Herdman recorded five tackles, two interceptions and a quarterback hurry as William & Mary picked up a 27-7 road victory at Colgate. The senior safety helped lead a strong defensive performance from the Tribe, which shut out the Raiders over the first three quarters and allowed just 262 total yards. Herdman has intercepted three passes in the past two weeks.

CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Rich Carr, Sr., DB, Maine (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep)

Carr blocked two extra points, one of which he returned 95 yards, that were the difference in Maine’s 31-26 win over Merrimack. The senior’s first blocked PAT was returned 75 yards for a defensive extra point by Kolubah Pewee, Jr. and the second, which he returned for two points, came late in the third period. It was just the third time in FCS history a team has two defensive extra points in a game.
 
CAA Football Rookie of the Week
Tyler King, Fr., LB, Stony Brook (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland)
 
King tallied a career-high 12 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and a sack in Stony Brook’s road game at Pac 12 power Oregon. The freshman linebacker led a Seawolves’ defense that held the high-powered Ducks to just 17 first-half points and his sack ended the second quarter. For the season, King has 23 total tackles and 4.5 TFL’s.
