RICHMOND, Va. (October 24, 2022) – CAA Football has announced its weekly award winners for Week 8 of the 2022 season. Rhode Island graduate student running back Marques DeShields was selected as the Offensive Player of the Week, while William & Mary senior safety Tye Freeland and Richmond sophomore defensive end Jeremiah Grant shared Defensive Player of the Week honors. New Hampshire sophomore punter Sean Lehane was chosen as the Special Teams Player of the Week and Stony Brook quarterback Charlie McKee was named the Rookie of the Week.
 
CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week
Marques DeShields, Gr., RB, Rhode Island (Clemonton, N.J./Overbrook)
 
DeShields accounted for 256 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns as Rhode Island outlasted Monmouth, 48-46, in a FCS-record seven overtimes. The grad student rushed for a career-best 161 yards and 2 TD’s on 28 carries, and also caught three passes for 95 yards and 2 TD’s. DeShields had a game-tying 77-yard TD reception with 3:23 to go in regulation and scored from a yard out in the first overtime.
 
CAA Football Co-Defensive Player of the Week
Tye Freeland, Sr., S, William & Mary (Petersburg, Va./Dinwiddie)
 
Freeland contributed a team-high 11 tackles (8 solo), a tackle for loss and three forced fumbles in William & Mary’s 44-24 win at Towson. The three forced fumbles are the most by any player in FCS this season. Freeland was part of a Tribe defense that held Towson to just three points over the first 38 minutes of the contest.

CAA Football Co-Defensive Player of the Week
Jeremiah Grant, So., DE, Richmond (South Orange, N.J./Bergen Catholic)
 
Grant recorded a career-high seven tackles, including two tackles for loss (-13 yards) and a sack, in Richmond’s 41-10 triumph at Hampton. The sophomore defensive end was part of a strong defensive effort by the Spiders, who held the Pirates to 255 total yards with just 31 coming in the second half. Grant had one of three UR sacks on the afternoon.

CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Sean Lehane, So., P, New Hampshire (Milford, Mass./Milford)

Lehane averaged 44.8 yards on five punts and dropped four of them inside the 10-yard line to help New Hampshire get past Elon, 40-22. The sophomore’s first four punts pinned the Phoenix at the 1-yard line, 4-yard line, 1-yard line and 7-yard line. He also had two punts over 50 yards, including a 56-yarder. Lehane is averaging 41.1 yards per punt for the season.

CAA Football Rookie of the Week
Charlie McKee, Fr., QB, Stony Brook (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside)
 
McKee completed 18-of-21 passes for a career-high 249 yards and three touchdowns as Stony Brook rallied past Maine, 28-27, for its first victory. Trailing 20-7 at the half, the freshman threw a pair of scoring passes (10 and 1 yards) in the third quarter before hitting Khalil Newton on a 7-yard TD toss that gave the Seawolves the lead with 5:48 remaining.
