Monmouth Collects Three Major Awards to Highlight CAA Field Hockey Year-End Honors
Hunter Peters
RICHMOND, Va. (Nov. 3, 2022) – Monmouth collected three major awards to highlight the 2022 CAA field hockey year-end honors as graduate forward
Annick van Lange was selected as the CAA Offensive Player of the Year, freshman goalkeeper
Phileine Hazen earned CAA Co-Rookie of the Year accolades, and head coach
Carli Figlio was named CAA Coach of the year in a vote of the league’s seven head coaches.
Delaware and Northeastern were represented with major award winners, as the Blue Hens' junior defender
Julia Duffhuis garnered CAA Defensive Player of the Year honors and freshman forward
Emmy Stubbs of Northeastern shared CAA Co-Rookie of the Year accolades.
van Lange took the CAA by storm in the Hawks' first season in the league, leading the conference in points, shots (80) and goals. The Stint-Job, Belgium native leads the NCAA with 23 goals and ranks second nationally with 50 points. van Lange scored in 11 matches and had seven multi-goal performances with four hat tricks. In addition to setting career bests for points and goals in a season, van Lange established new single-game career highs with four goals and nine points on October 2. The four goals match the most in a game in the NCAA this season, while the nine points are the most by a CAA student-athlete since 2018.
Duffhuis earns CAA Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive year as the Blue Hens have now had a major award winner in seven straight seasons. It is also the third CAA major award in her career after collecting CAA Rookie of the Year honors following the spring 2021 season. Duffhuis leads Delaware with 18 points and eight goals this season. Eleven points and five of her goals came in conference play, helping Delaware earn a share of the CAA regular season title for the first time in three seasons.
Hazen started all 17 matches in the cage for Monmouth as a true freshman, racking up 1019:31 minutes. The Nieuw-Vennep, Netherlands native posted a 10-7 record with a 1.71 goals against average. Hazen led the conference in save percentage and saves per game, ranking sixth nationally with 6.65 saves per game and eighth in the NCAA with a .796 save percentage.
Stubbs becomes the fifth CAA Rookie of the Year from Northeastern and the first since 2019. The freshman forward led all first-year players in points and goals, ranking second in the conference overall with 24 points and 11 goals. Stubbs added 11 points and five goals in conference play, including both of her multi-goal performances this fall.
Figlio guided Monmouth to a seamless transition into the CAA as the Hawks earned a share of the regular season title with a 5-1 mark and the top seed in the conference tournament during the program’s first season in the league. Monmouth finished the regular season on a six-game winning streak and ended the year atop the CAA with a +14-goal differential. The Hawks lead the conference in several statistical categories under Figlio’s leadership, ranking top 10 nationally in save percentage (4th/.805), saves per game (6th/7.06) and assists per game (8th/2.71) while ranking in the top 20 in points per game (16th/7.88) and goals per game (19th/2.59).
Hazen and van Lange were joined by their teammate
Meis Kengen on the All-CAA First Team as the Hawks matched Delaware with a league-high three honorees. Duffhuis was accompanied by
Berber Bakermans and
Ashlyn Carr for the Blue Hens. Drexel had a pair of All-CAA First Team selections, with
Eline Di Leva and
Taylor Mason receiving accolades. Additionally, Hofstra’s
Cami Larsson, William & Mary’s
Lauren Curran and
Mak Graves of Northeastern filled out the All-CAA First Team.
In a year filled with parity, the all-conference representation was reflected as such. Four teams – Delaware, Drexel, Monmouth and Northeastern – had five student-athletes receive postseason recognition, while Hofstra, Towson and William & Mary each had three total representatives.
