RICHMOND, Va. (Dec. 29, 2023) – Conference play opened in CAA Women’s Basketball as Charleston and Drexel started the year 1-0 following road victories in their conference openers. The Dragons had an impressive shooting performance, while the Cougars earned a gutsy comeback win to begin the year victorious in CAA play.
Drexel 71, UNCW 47 | Box Score
All nine Dragons to see the court scored as Drexel shot a season-high 57.7 percent from the floor to defeat UNCW 71-47 in each team’s conference opener. Keishana Washington scored the first eight Drexel points and tallied 13 of her game-high 21 in the first quarter as the Dragons took a 21-14 lead after one. Drexel extended its lead at the half, outscoring the Seahawks 21-10 in the second frame to mount a 42-24 advantage that UNCW would not overcome. It marks the 46th consecutive game in double figures for Washington, who added six assists and three rebounds in the effort. Maura Hendrixson added 10 points, six assists and three steals for the Dragons, while Jayde Gamble was the lone Seahawk in double figures with 11 points. With the win, Drexel has won its CAA opener for the third straight season.
Charleston 53, Towson 48 | Box Score
Charleston scored 44 points in the second half and erased a 14-point halftime deficit to defeat Towson 53-48 to begin CAA play 1-0 for the first time since 2019-20. After being held scoreless for the entirety of the second quarter, Charleston went 9-of-17 from the floor in the third, including 5-of-6 from three-point range to outscore Towson 24-10 in the period, tying tie the game at 33 heading into the fourth. Alexis Andrews scored all of her game-high 14 points in the frame to spark the big quarter for the Cougars, going 5-of-5 from the field and 4-of-4 from beyond the arc. Tied at 46, Jada Logan hit the go-ahead floater with 53 seconds remaining, and the Cougars hit five free throws down the stretch to complete the comeback victory. Logan recorded 12 points and nine rebounds in the effort, and Anika McGarity rounded out the Cougars in double figures with 13 points. For Towson, Quinzia Fulmore recorded her third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Kylie Kornegay-Lucas added 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists. It marks the first victory for Charleston at Towson since 2017.
