#CAAHoops WBB Recap – Dec. 30 – Trio of Newcomers Win CAA Debuts

RICHMOND, Va. (Dec. 30, 2022) – Three conference newcomers – Monmouth, North Carolina A&T and Stony Brook – earned their first CAA victories in program history with wins in their league play debuts. In addition, the defending CAA Champions Delaware opened its title defense 1-0 in conference play.
Monmouth 54, Northeastern 49 | Box Score
Monmouth used hot shooting from behind the arc and a stout defensive effort to defeat Northeastern 54-49 to win its first-ever CAA contest. The Hawks hit nine treys, shooting 40.9 percent from three-point range while limiting the Huskies to their second-lowest field goal percentage (30.9) this season and two three-point makes. Monmouth controlled the contest for the first three quarters, but a 10-0 Northeastern run in the fourth gave the Huskies a 44-41 lead midway through the final frame. Monmouth absorbed the blow and responded with a counter punch, tying the game at 49 with 42 seconds on the clock before Amiya Carroll hit the go-ahead three with 27 seconds remaining. Carroll tallied a career-best 11 points off the bench, joining Ariana Vanderhoop with a team-high 17 and Bri Tinsley with 12 in double figures. Derin Erdogan paced Northeastern, scoring a game-high 18 points, while Deja Bristol was rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine boards.
North Carolina A&T 67, Elon 50 | Box Score
A big fourth quarter propelled North Carolina A&T to a 67-50 win over Elon as the Aggies notched their first-ever CAA victory. North Carolina A&T built a modest 42-37 lead at the end of the third quarter before the Aggies made their statement, going a perfect 8-of-8 from the floor in the final frame to outscore the Phoenix 25-13 and emerge victoriously. Four Aggies reached double figures, led by Jazmin Harris with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double this season. Jordyn Dorsey and Maleia Bracone added 14 and 13 points, respectively, while D’Mya Tucker tallied 11 points and seven rebounds. A pair of freshmen led the way for Elon as Raven Preston had a team-high 12 points and game-high 13 rebounds for her third double-double this year, while Chloe Williams added 10 points.
Stony Brook 89, William & Mary 69 | Box Score
Five Seawolves scored in double figures as Stony Brook earned an 89-61 win over William & Mary for its first CAA victory in program history. After a close first 20 minutes saw Stony Brook take a 37-33 lead at halftime, the Seawolves came out of the break on fire, shooting 62.1 percent (18-29) from the floor to outscore the Tribe 52-28 in the second half. Gigi Gonzalez scored 15 of her game-high 17 points after the break, adding seven assists and five rebounds for the Seawolves. Annie Warren and Sherese Pittman contributed 16 points with six and seven rebounds, respectively, while Pittman added three steals and two blocks defensively. Daishai Almond and Kelis Corley rounded out the Seawolves in double figures with 15 and 10, respectively. Sydney Wagner paced William & Mary with 12 points, marking her ninth game with at least 10 points this season.
Delaware 77, Hofstra 65 | Box Score
Delaware outscored Hofstra 27-17 in the fourth quarter behind a 16-0 run to begin CAA play 1-0 for the third straight season. Hofstra went into halftime with a 34-30 lead after shooting 56.5 percent (13-23) from the floor and 75.0 percent (6-8) behind the arc over the first 20 minutes. Trailing by six in the third, Delaware used a 12-0 run to take a 48-42 advantage, but the Pride cut the deficit to two by the end of the frame. Hofstra pulled within one midway through the fourth quarter before the Blue Hens went on a 16-0 run out of the under-five media timeout to put the game away. Klarke Sconiers led Delaware with 21 points, shooting 9-of-13 from the floor. Makayla Pippen and Jewel Smalls added 13 points apiece for the Blue Hens, with Pippen grabbing nine rebounds and Smalls tallying eight rebounds and six steals. Additionally, Nakiya Mays-Prince recorded a career-high 11 assists for a new single-game league high. Sorelle Ineza poured in a career-best 21 points to pace Hofstra, shooting 8-of-13 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from three-point range.
