RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 11, 2022) – Colonial Athletic Association teams in numerous sports begin their 2022 campaigns this weekend, including the first pitch of softball and opening draw of women's lacrosse in the CAA.
Softball: The opening weekend of the softball season will feature five CAA teams in action. Charleston opens the season with a road trip to Alabama, heading to Troy on Friday before playing in the Stinger Classic in Montgomery on Saturday and Sunday. Delaware heads south to the Sunshine State, opening the season at the Stetson Lead Off Classic, while Towson and UNCW travel to South Carolina. The Tigers start 2022 at the Spartan Classic at USC Upstate, and the Seahawks begin the spring in the CSU Kickoff Tournament at Charleston Southern. Elon is the lone team playing at home opening weekend as the Phoenix will host Elon Softball Classic Friday through Sunday. |

Women’s Lacrosse: All seven CAA women’s lacrosse teams open their schedules this weekend with eight games, including four against ranked opponents. Elon will face two of the four ranked foes on the schedule with No. 11 Virginia visiting on Friday (4 p.m., FloLive) and No. 8 Duke making the trip over from Durham on Sunday (1 p.m., FloLive).
The other six CAA teams open their seasons Saturday, as Delaware returns to action with a visit from No. 17 Rutgers (11 a.m., FloLive), and No. 12 James Madison welcomes No. 2 North Carolina in a high-profile showdown (1 p.m., LSN). No. 16 Drexel opens its season in Philadelphia against Wagner (12 p.m., FloLive), William & Mary travels to Villanova (12 p.m, FloLive), and a pair of CAA squads face in-state NEC opponents with Towson hosting Mount St. Mary’s (1 p.m., FloLive) and Hofstra makes the short trip over to LIU (2 p.m., NEC Front Row). |
Weekend Schedule
Men’s Lacrosse: CAA men’s lacrosse started the year 2-0 last weekend with Delaware and Hofstra earning victories in their season openers. Five teams will be in action this weekend, with three taking the field for the first time this spring. Towson, who is receiving votes in the USILA Coaches and IL Media poll, will host No. 16 Johns Hopkins at 6:00 p.m. on Friday in the first game of the CAA’s broadcast package on Lax Sports Network.
On Saturday, Fairfield and UMass kick off their seasons on the road as the Stags visit Stony Brook (12 p.m., ESPN3) and the Minutemen travel to West Point to take on No. 11 Army (12 p.m., ESPN+). No. 19 Delaware and Hofstra will host home contests with the Pride entertaining Sacred Heart (1 p.m., FloLive) and the Blue Hens taking on Mount St. Mary’s (2 p.m., FloLive). |

Golf: Three CAA men’s golf programs will take to the course with two playing in their first spring tournaments. UNCW tees off Saturday at the Vystar Gators Invitational in Jacksonville, while Charleston and Drexel open three-day events Sunday with the Cougars at the Puerto Rico Classic and the Dragons at the Advance Golf Partners Collegiate in Florida. William & Mary’s Ethan Mangum is also in action on Monday, as the Tribe freshman was selected as a Pathway Player for the Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase in California.
On the women’s side, James Madison and Towson are in action on Monday and Tuesday with the Dukes in Las Vegas for The Show at Spanish Trail and the Tigers in Jacksonville for the San Jose Intercollegiate.
Tennis: Eight women’s and five men’s tennis teams are in action over the course of the weekend. On the women’s side, Delaware (Villanova/Navy), Drexel (Army/UConn), Elon (Campbell/Gardner-Webb), UNCW (Campbell/Gardner-Webb), Towson (Richmond/George Mason) and William & Mary (Radford/George Mason) play multiple matches. Charleston visits ACC member Clemson and JMU heads to in-state foe Liberty. In men’s action, Delaware (Villanova/VCU) is the only team with more than one match. Drexel meets future CAA member Monmouth, JMU takes on Longwood, UNCW hosts Troy and William & Mary battles Radford.
