UNCW Men, William & Mary Women Maintain Leads After Day 2 Of CAA Swimming & Diving Championships

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (February 17, 2022) –  UNCW extended its advantage in the men’s competition, and William & Mary maintained its edge in the women’s competition after Day 2 at the 2022 CAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday night at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

On the men’s side, UNCW won two individual events and a relay to increase their team point total to 326 and expand its lead to 108 points over second-place Drexel with 218 points. Towson is third with 217 points, followed by Delaware with 208 points and William & Mary with 100 points.

On the women’s side, William & Mary, which got a record-setting performance from Missy Cundiff in the 50 free, maintained its lead with 249 points. UNCW closed to within four with 245 points after a pair of individual wins. Towson is third with 180 points, followed by Drexel with 178 points, Delaware with 159 points and Northeastern with 153 points.



Women’s 500 Yard Freestyle
UNCW sophomore Brooke Knisely led wire-to-wire and broke her own school record by nearly five seconds with a time of 4:44.66, becoming the first Seahawks’ swimmer to win the 500 free since 1995. Defending champion Elizabeth Intihar of William & Mary placed second with a time of 4:49.93 and Drexel’s Maddie Riley was third with a time of 4:53.51.

Men’s 500 Yard Freestyle
UNCW freshman Sam O’Brien steadily pulled away and took gold with a time of 4:23.83, becoming the first Seahawks’ swimmer to capture the 500 free since 2003. Taking second with a time of 4:26.86 was Drexel’s Alessio Gianni and finishing third with a time of 4:27.50 was Delaware’s Andrew Taylor.

Women’s 200 Yard Individual Medley
Delaware junior Mira Selling touched the wall first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.60, making it the second year in a row that a Blue Hens’ swimmer took gold in the event. William & Mary freshman Ellie Scherer finished second in a time of 2:02.80 and third place went to UNCW’s Kathryn Knorr with a time of 2:03.20.

Men’s 200 Yard Individual Medley
UNCW junior Henderson Louviere captured the 200 IM for the second year i6n a row with a time of 1:46.24, breaking his own school record. Taking silver for the second consecutive year was Towson’s Brian Benzing with a time of 1:46.62 and placing third was Drexel’s Paris Raptis with a time of 1:47.21.

Women’s 50 Yard Freestyle
William & Mary senior Missy Cundiff broke the CAA meet record with a first-place time of 22.26, topping the mark of 22.30 set by W&M’s Katie Radloff in 2009. Coming in second with a time of 22.47 was Drexel’s Lera Nasedkina and finishing third with a time of 22.48 was Northeastern’s Jamie Koo.

Men’s 50 Yard Freestyle
Towson junior Michael Fazio touched the wall first in a time of 19.82, becoming the Tigers’ first 50 free winner since 2007. Defending champion E’likai Crompton-English of UNCW was a close second with a time of 19.94 and placing third with a time of 20.07 was William & Mary’s Graham Hertweck.

Women’s 3-Meter Diving
UNCW junior Courtney Klausen became the Seahawks’ first champion in the 3-meter diving competition since 1999 with a score of 302.10. Northeastern freshman Erin Murphy finished second with a score of 285.05 and Towson sophomore Alyssa Largay placed third with a score of 275.60.

Women’s 400 Yard Medley Relay
Drexel won the 400 Yard medley relay for the third time in the past four years, as the team of Federica Nocera, Megan Sicinski, Chelsea Gravereaux and and Lera Nasedkina posted a time of 3:40.05. William & Mary was close behind in second with a time of 3:40.60 and Delaware finished third with a time of 3:41.69.

Men’s 400 Yard Medley Relay
UNCW captured the 400 Yard medley relay for the first time since 2013 as the team of Will Barker, Gianmichel D’Alessandro, Henderson Louviere and Kenneth Lowe finished in a school-record time of 3:11.17. The Seahawks edged second-place Towson, which finished in 3:11.61, and third place went to Delaware with a time of 3:12.10.
