OVERLAND PARK, Kansas – Towson University senior defenseman Koby Smith has been named as one of 20 men's lacrosse candidates for the 2022 Senior CLASS Award. The list of candidates was announced on Monday March 14, 2022.

From SeniorCLASSAward.com:
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior or graduate student and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character, and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The 20 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced in conjunction with the 2022 NCAA Men's Lacrosse National Championship in May.

Smith, who hails from nearby Lutherville, Maryland, is the only men's lacrosse student-athlete selected as a candidate from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). A three-time captain for the Tigers, Smith was also honored as the CB30 Award winner, named for the late Carl Beernink.

Off the field, Smith plays a key role in the Tigers' community service efforts, including Towson's annual HEADstrong Foundation Mustache Madness efforts as a leader in the locker room. He also helps coach youth clinics and understands the importance of postgame autograph sessions with youth club teams.

During his time with the Black and Gold, Smith has played in 57 career games, making 43 starts. To date, Smith has 60 career caused turnovers, ranking fifth all-time in program history. He has 11 at the midway point of the 2022 season. The communications major has 113 career ground balls, snagging a dozen this season. Deadly in transition, Smith has racked 13 career goals and nine career assists for 22 total points as a Tiger.
