RICHMOND, Va. (April 19, 2022) – The CAA announced its weekly award winners in men’s and women’s tennis on Tuesday. Hofstra junior
Bo Cautaerts, Drexel sophomore
Alex De Sousa, and the James Madison doubles team of sophomore
Oscar Hernandez and senior
William Karpinski received men’s honors. On the women’s side, Drexel freshman
Lorie Lemongo and the Towson doubles team of senior
Themis Haliou and sophomore
Lea Kosanovic were honored.
CAA Men’s Tennis Co-Player of the Week
Bo Cautaerts, Jr., Hofstra (Brussels, Belgium)
Cautaerts won three consecutive three-set matches at No. 1 singles to close the regular season last week. The junior clinched Hofstra’s 4-3 team victory over Queens by rallying past Kareem Rashad, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. He outlasted NJIT’s Amine El Khoti, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in a narrow 4-3 setback. Cautaerts capped his week by getting by Drexel’s Xandy Hammitt, 7-6, 6-7, 4-3 in another close 4-3 loss.
CAA Men’s Tennis Co-Player of the Week
Alex De Sousa, So., Drexel (Canterbury, UK)
De Sousa posted a 3-0 record at No. 2 singles to help Drexel go 2-1 in three tight matches last week. The sophomore defeated Villanova’s Matthew Jones, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the Dragons’ 4-3 team win over their city rivals. He edged Delaware’s Pascal Wagemaker, 6-4, 3-6, 10-2 in a 4-3 loss to the Blue Hens. De Sousa closed the week by beating Hofstra’s Ostap Kovalenko, 7-6 (3), 6-1 as Drexel picked up a 4-3 victory.
CAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Oscar Hernandez, So., James Madison (Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, Spain)
William Karpinski, Sr., James Madison (Potomac, Md.)
Hernandez and Karpinski completed the spring season with a perfect 7-0 record after a pair of victories last week. Competing at the No. 3 slot, the JMU duo downed Morgan State’s Niles Rachal and Rhajzon Rankina, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point in a 5-2 team win. On the road against Big Ten foe Penn State, they clinched the doubles point once again by beating Harrison Janes and Alexander Karman, 6-4.
CAA Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Lorie Lemongo, Fr., Drexel (Yaounde, Cameroon)
Lemongo went 3-0 at No. 1 singles against conference opponents last week to help Drexel to a 2-1 team mark. The freshman topped Towson’s Themis Hailou, 6-3, 6-4, in the Dragons’ 6-1 victory. She followed with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Delaware’s Eliza Askarova to record Drexel’s lone point in the match. Lemongo ended the week by beating Hofstra’s April Sanchez, 6-2, 6-2, as Drexel defeated the Pride, 6-1. She and partner Mya Fuentes were also 2-1 at No. 1 doubles last week.
CAA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Themis Haliou, Sr. Towson (Strovolos, Cyprus)
Lea Kosanovic, So., Towson (Bethesda, Md.)
Playing together for the first time this season, Haliou and Kosanovic went 2-0 at No. 1 doubles in Towson’s team victories over Delaware State (5-2) and Bucknell (4-0). The Tigers’ tandem topped DSU’s Daria Julia and Iris Leder, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point. They also claimed the doubles point against Bucknell by rallying from a 5-1 deficit to defeat Daniella Bellini and Whitney King, 7-5.
