CARY, N.C. – James Madison two-way player Chase DeLauter has been named one of the 45 student-athletes to the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.
DeLauter, who was named to the preseason watch list, becomes the first JMU student-athlete to be named to the midseason watch list since first being instituted in 2013. He is the lone representative from the CAA on the list and becomes only the seventh player ever from the conference to earn the recognition.
The Martinsburg, W.Va. has been playing at the top of his game so far this season. He currently sits fifth in the country in on base percentage (.563), 25
th in walks (25), 29
th in batting average (.413), and 42
nd in slugging percentage (.733). The league leader in all four of those categories, he also ranks in the conference second in runs scored (28), third in RBI’s (29), and fifth in home runs (six).
He has an active streak of 19 consecutive games that he has reached base safely in as well as a streak of nine straight games that he has drawn a walk in. He leads the team with 11 multi-hit games and is third on the team in multi-RBI games with eight, including an eight-RBI outing against VMI where he was one RBI shy of tying the single game program record. He has scored multiple runs in 10 of the 21 games he has played in this season and he has put together a seven-game hit streak and a nine-game hit streak so far, as he has only been held hitless three times when he has recorded an official at bat. His seven-game hit streak saw him record multiple hits in every game.
