Charleston Sweeps Major All-CAA Honors for 2021-22 Men's Golf Season
Miles McQuiggan
RICHMOND, Va. (May 19, 2022) – The Charleston men’s golf team added to an accomplished spring for the program by sweeping Colonial Athletic Association major awards for the 2021-22 season.
Charleston freshman
Kieron van Wyk – the individual medalist at the 2022 CAA Men’s Golf Championship at Dataw Island in April – was voted as CAA Golfer of the Year by the league’s head coaches, while freshman teammate
Nevill Ruiter was a unanimous pick for CAA Rookie of the Year. Charleston head coach
Mitch Krywulycz was selected by his peers as CAA Coach of the Year.
van Wyk has won two tournaments in the spring, capturing first in the Schenkel Invitational at 12-under before his 13-under tied the CAA championship individual record in April. van Wyk’s top-five finish at the NCAA regional in Florida this week helped the Cougars advance from the Palm Beach Gardens Regional to the NCAA Championship.
Ruiter has recorded a 70.3 scoring average in his first season in Charleston and three top-three finishes. The freshman from the Netherlands won the Daniel Island Intercollegiate in the fall and finished third at the Hootie at Bulls Bay before a second-place result at the CAA Championship. Ruiter added a top-10 result at the ncaa regional this week.
Krywulycz led the Cougars to another CAA title in April with a dominant performance at Dataw Island. Charleston has finished in the top five as a team in six events this season, including this week’s NCAA regional, in which the Cougars matched the top finish (fifth) by a CAA team in league history. Krywulycz collects his second-consecutive coach of the year honor.
Charleston earned three of five spots on the All-CAA first team with van Wyk and Ruiter joined by
Zach Reuland. Delaware’s
Roberto Nieves and UNCW’s
Walker Isley added first-team recognition. Drexel collected two of five second-team honors thanks to
Angelo Giantsopulos and
Drue Nicholas, while the Dragon duo was joined by Elon’s
Garrett Risner, James Madison’s
Ignacio Montero, and UNCW’s
Lansdon Robbins.
