Towson Closes Game on Six-Goal Run to Advance to CAA Women's Lacrosse Final

PHILADELPHIA (May 6, 2022) – Towson scored the game’s final six goals to battle back and advance to the title game of the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Lacrosse Championship presented by Primis with a 12-8 semifinal victory over Delaware in a driving rain at Vidas Field.
 
Towson trailed 8-6 before scoring six straight goals to take a lead the Tigers would not relinquish. Blair Pearre scored five goals and Kerri Thornton added three to help the Tigers return to the Final for the eighth time under head coach Sonia LaMonica and first since 2018.
   
Delaware scored two of the game’s first three goals with Danielle Livornese and Danika Swech giving the Blue Hens a 2-1 lead six minutes into the contest. Towson took its first lead at 4-3 late in the first quarter on a Pearre goal. Delaware evened the game through 15 minutes on a Livornese goal.
 
The teams were even again through 30 minutes with Sydni Rosa’s third goal of the half giving Delaware a 6-5 lead before Pearre evened the game 47 seconds before halftime. Thornton and Pearre tallied two goals each for Towson in the first half.
 
Delaware scored the first two goals of the second half before Pearre scored twice in a span of 63 seconds to tie the game 8-8 with 5:10 to play in the third quarter. Thornton would put the Tigers in front at 9-8 with 2:11 remaining in the quarter – Towson’s first lead since 4-3 in the first quarter.
 
Towson would extend the lead to open the fourth on a Milana Zizakovic goal with 13:19 to play and added another from Pearre before Gabby Garrett’s goal sealed the victory at 12-8 with 3:48 to play.
 
The Tigers outshot the Blue Hens, 27-19, and held a 14-10 advantage in draw controls. Both teams committed 15 turnovers in the challenging weather in Philadelphia. Carly Merlo made eight saves for Towson, while Mercy McCarthy stopped seven shots for Delaware.
 
Towson will advance to face the winner of Friday’s second semifinal between Drexel and Hofstra on Sunday at noon. Sunday’s game can be seen on LSN and tickets are available HERE.
