The Colonial Athletic Association continues its celebration of the 50
th Anniversary of Title IX by recognizing five women from each institution who made a significant impact during their time as a student-athlete, coach or administrator.

Venessa Corbett, Basketball (1978-82)
Corbett was one of the top women’s basketball players in Elon history, earning All-America honors in 1980 and 1981 and being named Carolinas Conference Player of the Year in 1982. She is Elon’s all-time leading scorer with 2,430 points and also holds career records for field goals made (1,204) and rebounds per game (12.4). Corbett averaged a school-record 15.3 rebounds per contest in 1978-79 and also holds Elon single-game marks for points (43), field goals (21) and rebounds (23) in a game. She was honored with Basnight Outstanding Athlete Award in 1982 as the school’s top female student-athlete. Corbett’s uniform No. 55 has been retired at Elon and she has been inducted into the Elon Sports Hall of Fame.
Lakia Hayes, Basketball (1995-98)
Hayes was Elon’s leading scorer and rebounder during all three of her seasons with the basketball program. She tallied 1,353 points for the Phoenix and ranks third in career scoring average (17.7 ppg). Hayes was selected to the All-South Atlantic Conference team in 1996 and 1997 and received honorable mention All-America accolades in 1997 and 1998. In addition to her scoring marks, she ranks third in career rebound average (9.9 rpg), fifth in total rebounds (782) and second in career free throw percentage (78.7%). Hayes a two-time winner of the Basnight Outstanding Athlete Award (1997. 1998) as Elon’s top female student-athlete and was inducted into the Elon Sports Hall of Fame.
Fumiko Masuda, Tennis (1992-95)
Masuda was a standout for the Elon women’s tennis team, earning South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year honors in three consecutive seasons (1993, 1994, 1995). She qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championship as an individual and received All-America accolades in 1994. Masuda was ranked #8 nationally by the ITA in singles and doubles in 1995 and was #11 in singles and #9 in doubles during the 1994 season. She was recognized as the Basnight Outstanding Athlete Award winner in 1995 as Elon’s top female student-athlete.
Katie McGrath, Soccer/Basketball (1990-94)
McGrath was a two-sport performer at Elon who earned national acclaim for her play on the soccer field. She received first-team NAIA All-America honors in 1991 and 1992 and was a second-team NAIA and NSCAA All-American in 1993. McGrath made the All-South Atlantic Conference first team in each of her four seasons (1990-93) and was the league’s Freshman of the Year in 1990. During her career, the Phoenix compiled a 58-19-2 record, including 23-2 in conference play. Elon advanced to the NAIA National Tournament in 1992 and McGrath was chosen to the All-Tournament after being honored as the Defensive MVP at the South Regional. She received the Basnight Outstanding Athlete Award in 1991 and 1992 as Elon’s top female student-athlete and was inducted into the Elon Sports Hall of Fame.
Susan Yow, Basketball (1972-75)
Yow was part of successful basketball teams at both the collegiate and international levels. During her playing career at Elon, she was chosen as a Kodak All-American in 1975 and made the All-State team in 1974 and 1975. Her play helped lead Elon to the AIAW State Championship in 1994. Yow shot 58.1% from the floor during the 1973-74 season, which is the third-best mark in school history, and made 85.1% of her free throws in 1972-73, which is tied for the second-best performance at Elon. Yow began a career in coaching following her graduation from Elon and won three gold medals with USA Basketball – two with entry level teams and one with the 1988 Olympic team in Seoul, South Korea. She has been inducted into the Elon Sports Hall of Fame.
