RICHMOND, Va. (July 8, 2022) – The Colonial Athletic Association celebrates Stony Brook University’s entrance into the CAA, as the Seawolves officially joined the conference last Friday.
Stony Brook University, located in Stony Brook, New York, has an enrollment of nearly 27,000 and has claimed two Commissioner’s Cups in its tenure in the America East Conference. The Seawolves sponsor 18 Division I programs, all of which will join the football team that has competed under the CAA Football banner since 2013.
On the men’s side, Stony Brook sponsors baseball, basketball, cross country, football, lacrosse, soccer, and indoor and outdoor track & field. In women’s competition, the Seawolves will aim for a CAA crown in basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field, and volleyball.
“This invitation is a historic step for our institution and a testament to our tremendous growth – both in academics and athletics – over the last two decades,” said Stony Brook University President Maurie McInnis. “It would not be possible without the dedication of our student-athletes and coaches, who have paved the way for this moment. Our future is bright, and we look forward to competing for CAA Championships for years to come!”
The Seawolves’ men’s basketball team has reached the NCAA Tournament once and the NIT twice over the past decade, while the women’s basketball team won America East titles in 2020 and 2021 and made its first NCAA Tournament trip in 2021. As a CAA Football member since 2013, the Seawolves reached the FCS playoffs in 2017 and 2018. The Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team has reached the NCAA quarterfinals four times since 2017 and its baseball team advanced to the College World Series in 2012.
“The decision to move to the CAA is synchronous with the aspirational nature of our university as well as our department’s vision to positively transform the life of each student-athlete,” said Stony Brook Director of Athletics Shawn Heilbron. We took an extremely deliberate approach to this process and believe that the outcome encapsulates the best interests of our entire Stony Brook community.”
Stony Brook has been ranked among the top 25 public universities in the nation, and as a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), is one of the top 66 research institutions in North America.
