RICHMOND, Va. (September 5, 2022) – Delaware graduate student linebacker Johnny Buchanan has been honored as the FedEx Ground FCS National Defensive Player of the Week by Stats Perform.

Buchanan tied a UD record with 23 tackles, including nine solo stops and a forced fumble, as the Blue Hens defeated FBS foe Navy, 14-7. He made two key tackles in the red zone as the Blue Hens stopped a late drive by the Midshipmen and forced a turnover on downs. Buchanan led a defense that allowed just seven points, which was the fewest by a CAA team against a FBS opponent since 2006. The 23 tackles were the most in all of Division I, both FCS and FBS, this season.

Along with Buchanan’s award, Stats Perform recognized William & Mary quarterback Darius Wilson as a National Offensive Player of the Week honorable mention selection, and Rhode Island cornerback Jordan Jones and W&M linebacker John Pius as honorable mention for National Defensive Player of the Week. Towson wide receiver Isaiah Phillips was honorable mention as National Freshman of the Week.

Delaware and William & Mary received honorable mention as National Team of the Week.
