#CAAHoops WBB Recap – Jan. 13 – Hofstra Wins at the Buzzer, Dragons & Aggies Stay Perfect in Conference Play

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 13, 2023) – An eventful night in CAA women’s basketball saw four-of-six games tied at some point in the fourth quarter. Hofstra ended the night with an and-one buzzer-beater to give the Pride its second conference win this season. North Carolina A&T won in overtime to stay perfect in league play, while Drexel kept pace with the Aggies, improving to 5-0 atop the CAA standings. Stony Brook and Delaware used late fourth quarter runs to get back in the win column, and Towson was dominant at home to collect its second straight win.    
 
Hofstra 63, UNCW 62 | Box Score
Hofstra defeated UNCW 63-62 at the horn to give the Pride its second CAA victory this season. Seven points came in the final 18 seconds, including five in the last three seconds. Carrie Gross converted the driving layup with 18 seconds remaining to tie the game at 60 before she gave the Seahawks the lead in the closing seconds. Rosi Nicholson caught a three quarters court pass with three ticks on the clock, and drove to the basket, converting a layup and drawing a foul as time expired. Nicholson knocked down the free throw, giving her 10 points on the night, and lifted Hofstra to victory. Brandy Thomas paced Hofstra with 19 points and eight rebounds. In addition, Sorelle Ineaza tallied 14 points, shooting 5-of-6 from the floor for the Pride. Gross had a team-high 19 for the Seahawks, adding six rebounds and five assists in the effort. Jayde Gamble added 16 points, while Lexi Jackson nearly recorded a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.   
 
North Carolina A&T 67, Northeastern 63 (OT) | Box Score 
North Carolina A&T prevailed in overtime to defeat Northeastern 67-63 and improve to 5-0 in conference play. The Huskies erased a 15-point deficit in the final 6:58 of regulation to force the extra period, but a 7-0 run in overtime sparked by the go-ahead three from Nyah Willis gave the Aggies a 65-59 lead with 35 seconds to go. Willis paced North Carolina A&T with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting and was one of four Aggies in double figures. Jazmin Harris recorded 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Talia Davis added 11 points and D’Mya Tucker contributed 10. Derin Erdogan tallied a game-high 20 points and seven assists for Northeastern, while JaMiya Braxton recorded a season-high 19 points, connecting on 5-of-12 attempts from three-point range. The Aggie defense played a crucial role in the outcome, forcing Northeastern into a season-high 36 turnovers as North Carolina A&T scored 36 points off the Huskies’ miscues. 
 
Delaware 71, Elon 65 | Box Score
Delaware returned to the win column after coming from behind to defeat Elon 71-65. The Blue Hens trailed for over 25 minutes and by as many as 15 points in the first half. However, tied at 54 entering the fourth, Delaware outscored the Phoenix 17-11 in the final frame, including 11-5 over the final 4:30, which proved to be the difference. Klarke Sconiers went 8-for-11 from the field, leading Delaware with a game-high 19 points. Makayla Pippin and Nakiyah May-Prince also reached double figures for the Blue Hens with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Ajia James recorded season highs with 16 points and eight rebounds to pace the Phoenix. Lanaejha Evans tallied 15 points and six rebounds, while Raven Preston contributed 12 points and eight boards for Elon. Delaware shot 48.4 percent (30-62) from the floor compared to 40.4 percent (23-57) for Elon, while the Phoenix shot just 50.0 percent from the free throw line, converting only 14 of its 28 attempts. 
 
Stony Brook 69, Monmouth 59 | Box Score
Stony Brook rebounded following its first conference setback, earning a 69-59 victory over Monmouth in a battle of 3-1 teams. Tied at 56 with 3:22 remaining in the contest, Stony Brook ended the game on an 11-1 run to emerge victoriously. Stony Brook’s backcourt duo led the way for the Seawolves as Gigi Gonzalez scored a game-high 23 points and paced the team with eight rebounds. Annie Warren added 17 points, with 10 coming in the fourth quarter, to help the Seawolves outscore Monmouth 22-14 over the final frame. Kaci Donovan and Ariana Vanderhoop reached double figures for the Hawks, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively. Belle Kranbuhl pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, marking her fourth game this season with double-digit boards. Both teams shot 39 percent from the floor and recorded 37 rebounds, while the Seawolves edged the Hawks 15-8 in second-chance points and 22-17 in points off turnovers. 
 
Drexel 67, Hampton 51 | Box Score
Drexel stayed hot, winning its eighth straight game, and improved to 5-0 in CAA play following a 67-51 road win over Hampton. The Dragons limited the Lady Pirates to seven points in the opening frame, gaining a 14-7 advantage, and outscored Hampton in all four quarters. Eight of the nine players to see action score for Drexel, including three in double figures. Grace O’Neill shot 8-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-5 behind the arc, recording a game-high 19 points with six rebounds and four assists. Keishana Washington added 17 points, marking her 50th consecutive game in double figures, and Maura Hendrixson scored 13 points with six assists. Madison Buford paced Hampton with 12 points, extending her double figures streak to nine games, while Nylah Young contributed 11 points. Drexel shot 53.3 percent (24-45) from the floor in the contest, as the Dragons have shot over 45.0 percent in all eight games during their winning streak. Subsequently, the Drexel defense held Hampton to 38.8 percent (19-49) shooting in the contest.  
 
Towson 75, William & Mary 43 | Box Score 
Towson earned its second straight CAA victory, topping William & Mary 75-43. Anissa Rivera hit the final shot of the first quarter, giving Towson a 12-10 advantage, and the Tigers never looked back. Towson outscored the Tribe 24-11 in the second quarter, opening a 36-21 lead before outscoring William & Mary 39-22 in the second half. Rivera led Towson with 16 points and eight rebounds, shooting 6-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-4 from deep. Kylie Kornegay-Lucas added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Quinzia Fulmore chipped in 11 points with seven rebounds. Sydney Wagner was the lone member of the Tribe in double figures, scoring a team-high 11 points. Towson shot 42.6 percent (26-61) from the floor and 44.4 percent (8-18) from three-point range while holding William & Mary to a season-low 24.6 percent (16-65) from the field and 18.2 percent (4-22) from beyond the arc.
