#CAAHoops MBB Recap – Jan. 14 – No. 22 Charleston Improves to 18-1, Hofstra Wins Fourth Straight

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 14, 2023) – No. 22 Charleston became the nation’s first team to 18 wins, Hofstra gained sole possession of second place in CAA Men’s Basketball at 5-1, and four other teams – Drexel, North Carolina A&T, Towson, and William & Mary – were victorious in Saturday’s action around the league.
North Carolina A&T 61, Stony Brook 59
North Carolina A&T held Stony Brook without a field goal for the final 4:20 of the contest and closed the game on an 8-2 run to even its league record at 3-3. The Aggies trailed 57-53 before a
Marcus Watson three cut the deficit to one and a traditional three-point play from
Austin Johnson put A&T in front for good. The Aggies, who trailed for 32 minutes of the contest before prevailing at home, were led by a game-high 19 points from
Kam Woods plus 18 from Watson and 10 from Johnson.
Tyler Stephenson-Moore paced Stony Brook with 18 points, while
Frankie Policelli tallied his league-leading seventh double-double of the year with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
William & Mary 69, UNCW 67
William & Mary got 61 of its 69 points either at the paint or free-throw line to grind out a road win at UNCW and climb to 3-2 in CAA action. The Tribe held the Seahawks without a made field goal in the final 5:04 of the contest and overcame three players fouling out along with a 2-of-14 showing from three.
Anders Nelson scored 15 points for W&M, while
Charlie Williams – who had 18 points in his freshman season entering Saturday – tallied 15 of his own.
Trazarien White led all scorers with a 21-point night that included a 12-of-17 effort from the line. The game featured 10 lead changes and seven ties.
22/24 Charleston 78, Elon 60
An 11-0 run early in the second half helped No. 22 Charleston find its footing after a first half battle as the Cougars improved to 18-1 and 6-0 one-third of the way through their CAA schedule. Charleston outscored Elon 46-26 in the final 20 minutes led by 12 of
Dalton Bolon’s game-high 21 points. Bolon was 7-of-14 from the field and 6-of-11 from three, while Charleston attempted 45 of its 70 field goal attempts from distance and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds.
Max Mackinnon led Elon with a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Towson 68, Monmouth 48
Towson controlled on the glass, led by a double-double from
Charles Thompson, to better its CAA record to 3-2. Thompson notched 11 points and 11 rebounds and
Ryan Conway led all scorers with 17 points fueled by five made threes for the Tigers, who recorded a 41-28 rebounding margin. Towson never trailed in the contest and the 20-point margin of victory is the team’s largest of its 11 wins this season.
Myles Foster led the way for Monmouth with 14 points and six rebounds.
Drexel 76, Northeastern 55
Drexel shot 50% overall and got 31 points from its bench for a road win to improve to 4-2 in CAA play. The game was even at 14 before the Dragons scored the next 14 to build a cushion they would enjoy the rest of the contest.
Amari Williams and
Garfield Turner led Drexel with 12 points each and eight players tallied 6+ points.
Masai Troutman led Northeastern with 12 points.
Hofstra 86, Delaware 62
Aaron Estrada and
Warren Williams led Hofstra with 17 points each,
Tyler Thomas added 16, and
Jaquan Carlos chipped in with 14 as Hofstra improved to 5-1 in the CAA. The Pride shot 49% while holding the Blue Hens to 33%. Hofstra led 8-6 before ripping off a 21-5 run that included three pointers from Estrada,
Amar’e Marshall, and
German Plotnikov to push the advantage to a double-digit margin that would remain the rest of the contest. Hofstra racked up 13 steals in the contest including five from Carlos and four from Estrada.
Ebby Asamoah led Delaware with 13 points.
