#CAAHoops WBB Recap – Jan. 15 – Unbeaten's Fall, Towson Wins Third Straight

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 15, 2023) – If Friday wasn’t enough entertainment for you, Sunday followed with another crazy day around CAA Hoops. Towson won its third straight contest, while Northeastern collected its third win in the past four games. In Williamsburg, William & Mary handed Drexel its first conference loss of the season, and 250 miles away in Greensboro, Delaware, defeated North Carolina A&T for the Aggies’ first CAA loss. In addition, Charleston and Hampton got back on track with victories at home.
William & Mary 74, Drexel 58 | Box Score
William & Mary got back on track in a big way by handing Drexel its first loss in conference play this season, defeating the Dragons 74-58. The Tribe was on fire in the first half, shooting 53.3 percent (16-30) from the field and 55.6 percent (5-9) from three as William & Mary took a 42-26 lead into the break. Drexel cut the lead to five in the third quarter, but the Tribe closed out the contest strong, outscoring the Dragons 23-15 in the fourth the secure the victory. Riley Casey matched her career-high with 31 points to lead William & Mary. Casey has scored 31 points on four occasions this season, including two of the past three games. Her backcourt mate, Sydney Wagner, added 19 points for the Tribe. Keishana Washington led Drexel with 27 points, marking her 51st consecutive game in double figures, and she has scored 20 or more in 13 games this season.
Delaware 69, North Carolina A&T 52 | Box Score
Delaware capped off a three-game road trip with back-to-back wins, handing North Carolina A&T its first loss in CAA play this season 69-52. The second quarter was the difference maker in the contest as Delaware outscored the Aggies 24-8 in the frame. Delaware gained a 19-16 lead after the first before catching fire. The Blue Hens caught fire, shooting 61.5 percent (8-13) from the floor and 57.1 percent (4-7) from behind the arc in the second. Delaware held North Carolina A&T to 22.2 percent (10-35) shooting in the quarter and didn’t allow a three-point field goal as the Blue Hens took a 43-24 lead into the break and maintained the advantage the rest of the way. Kharis Idom paced four Blue Hens in double figures with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Jewel Smalls added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Klarke Sconiers and Rebecca Demeke each contributed 11. Jazmin Harris led North Carolina A&T with 12 points and five rebounds
Towson 63, Monmouth 57 | Box Score
Towson won its third straight contest, defeating Monmouth 63-57 to improve to 3-2 in conference play. Unlike the previous two victories, it was a hard-fought close victory for the Tigers. Towson trailed 17-15 after the first, but a 19-0 run in the second quarter allowed the Tigers to take a 36-32 lead at the break. After falling behind 42-40 with 4:08 remaining in the third, Towson used a 10-0 run to regain the lead. It proved to be the difference, as the Tigers took a 50-43 lead into the fourth and held on for the win. Ryann Evans paced Towson with a season-high 14 points in reserve minutes, while Anissa Rivera added 11 points for the Tigers off the bench. It marks the fourth straight game in double figures for Rivera, while Alexia Nelson joined the duo with 10 points. For the Hawks, Jen Louro poured in a career-high 25 points in 25 minutes off the bench, shooting 8-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-8 from three.
Charleston 55, Hofstra 47 | Box Score
Charleston snapped a three-game skid with a 55-47 victory over Hofstra on Sunday afternoon. The Cougars sprinted to an early advantage, gaining a 17-8 lead after the first quarter. Charleston held the Pride to eight points on 23.1 percent (3-13) shooting in the opening frame, helping the Cougars take a 31-25 advantage at the break. In the third, Charleston outscored Hofstra 14-9, holding the Pride under 10 points in a quarter for the second time in the game, which provided enough cushion to emerge victoriously. Jada Logan scored a game-high 25 points to lead Charleston, including 19 in the first half and 15 of Charleston’s 17 in the first quarter. Logan added six rebounds, three steals and two assists to round out her performance. Two players reached double figures for the Pride as Brandy Thomas recorded her sixth double-double this season with 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Alarice Gooden contributed 11 points off the bench.
Northeastern 69, Elon 51 | Box Score
After an overtime setback on Friday, Northeastern bounced back with a statement on Sunday, defeating Elon 69-51. The Huskies used a big first half to win its third game in the past four tries. Northeastern shot 52.9 percent (18-34) from the floor while holding the Phoenix to 28.6 percent (8-28) shooting to gain a 45-21 advantage at halftime. Elon outscored the Huskies 30-24 in the second half but could not overcome the early struggles. Northeastern’s JaMiya Braxton reset her career-high for the second straight game, recording 21 points to lead all scorers. Braxton went 8-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-7 from three-point range, with 19 of her points coming in the first half. Derin Erdogan and Ariana Webb also record double figures, adding 11 and 10 points, respectively. Raven Preston paced the Phoenix, recording her fourth double-double this season with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Hampton 38, UNCW 34 | Box Score
Hampton edged UNCW 38-34 in a defensive battle to snap a two-game skid. The Lady Pirates held UNCW to five points in the first quarter, but the Seahawks returned the favor in the second as Hampton gained a slight 13-11 advantage at halftime. The Lady Pirates extended the advantage by one at the end of the third, leading 25-22 after 30 minutes of action. UNCW cut the deficit to one with 13 ticks remaining, but Hampton sealed the deal with a steal and score in the final five seconds. Dlayla Chakolis led Hampton, scoring a career-high 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor, adding six rebounds. Carrie Gross paced UNCW with a team-high 11 points, while Lexi Jackson grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds in the setback.
