#CAAHoops MBB Recap – Jan. 19 – Standout Offensive Performances Highlight Thursday Action

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 19, 2023) – No. 18 Charleston overcame a slow start to become the nation’s first team to 20 wins, Hofstra put together a dominant second half in a battle for second place, and four other teams – Delaware, Drexel, Northeastern, and Towson – were victorious in Thursday night’s CAA men’s basketball action.
Four of Thursday’s winners – Delaware, Drexel, Northeastern, and Towson – exceeded their season scoring averages by 10+ points. Eight players around the league scored 20 or more points including three of 25+.
18/21 Charleston 69, Monmouth 55
Charleston trailed by three at the half before coming out of the locker room on a 20-8 run to gain the lead and extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 19 games. Charleston (20-1, 8-0) held Monmouth to 24 points in the second half after trailing 31-28.
Reyne Smith hit seven threes for the Cougars on his way to a game-high 27 points, while
Dalton Bolon added 15. Charleston shot 44% in the second half after going 8-for-28 (29%) in the opening 20 minutes.
Andrew Ball notched a career-high 16 for Monmouth (1-18, 0-6).
Hofstra 70, UNCW 46
Hofstra controlled the second half to earn sole possession of second place in the CAA standings. The game was tied at 30 at the break before Hofstra (13-8, 6-2) outscored UNCW 40-16 in the final 20 minutes while shooting 59%.
Tyler Thomas scored Hofstra’s first seven points and a game-high 28 along with seven rebounds for the Pride, which also received 17 points, seven rebounds, and four steals from
Aaron Estrada.
Maleeck Harden-Hayes scored a team-high 13 for UNCW (15-6, 5-3).
Towson 79, North Carolina A&T 67
Towson shot 53% and had four starters in double figures to earn its third straight victory. Towson (13-7, 5-2) never trailed in the contest while the Tigers limited themselves to seven turnovers in the game’s first 37 minutes.
Nygal Russell tallied a team-high 18 points for Towson, while
Nicolas Timberlake added 17, and
Sekou Sylla (15) and
Charles Thompson (13) joined them in double figures.
Kam Woods scored 29 for North Carolina A&T (9-12, 4-4) in the setback, which snapped the Aggies’ three-game winning streak.
Delaware 80, William & Mary 53
Four Blue Hens were in double figures, led by 20 from
Jameer Nelson Jr. in his first action since December, and Delaware (11-9, 3-4) shot 56% to pull away down the stretch. The Blue Hens led 38-31 at the half before outscoring William & Mary (8-12, 3-4) 42-22 in the final 20 minutes.
Jyáre Davis added 14 points for Delaware, while
L.J. Owens and
Christian Ray chipped in with 13 points each. Delaware was +7 (32-25) on the boards and scored 38 of its points in the paint.
Gabe Dorsey went 6-of-11 from three for William & Mary to lead the Tribe with 18 points.
Northeastern 79, Stony Brook 66
A career night from freshman
Masai Troutman paced Northeastern (8-10, 4-3) and the Huskies earned a split of the season series. Troutman tallied 20 points and seven rebounds to help Northeastern score 48 second half points after trailing by one at halftime.
Jahmyl Telfort added 20 of his own for the Huskies, who shot 15-of-21 (71%) in the second half and 59% for the game while knocking down 13 threes. Northeastern held its opponent under 20 rebounds for the second consecutive game with a 29-19 margin.
Frankie Policelli led all scorers with 22 points for Stony Brook (7-12, 3-3).
Drexel 79, Hampton 73
Drexel shot 49% and made 11 three-pointers to climb to a tie for third in the CAA standings. The Dragons (11-8, 5-2) assisted on 17 of 25 made field goals with seven helpers coming from
Justin Moore, who added 14 points.
Lamar Oden Jr. led the Dragons with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting and 4-of-5 from three and
Amari Williams tallied a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Deuce Dean led all scorers with 21 points for Hampton (3-16, 0-7).
