#CAAHoops WBB Recap – Jan. 20 – Aggies Move into First Place in the Conference Standings

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 20, 2023) – All four games in CAA Women's Basketball were decided by less than 10 points on Friday night, headlined by North Carolina A&T moving into sole possession of first place in the conference race. The Aggies defeated Stony Brook in a heavy-weight CAA battle in a game closer than the final score reflected. Towson stayed hot, winning its fourth straight game, while Charleston collected its second consecutive win in league play. Additionally, UNCW was victorious in its first conference contest this season, marking the Seahawks’ first win in CAA play since March 5, 2021.
North Carolina A&T 68, Stony Brook 60 | Box Score
North Carolina A&T outscored Stony Brook 36-23 in the second half to claim its stake atop the CAA standings, defeating the Seawolves 68-60. Stony Brook led by five at halftime before pushing its lead to nine midway through the third. The Aggies battled back to tie the game at the end of the period, and the margin stayed within three points much of the fourth. Trailing by 60-59 with 4:44 remaining, North Carolina A&T closed the game on a 9-0 as Jazmin Harris hit the go-ahead basket before the Aggies made seven free throws down the stretch. Harris paced the Aggies with 15 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Three teammates joined her in double figures, including Laila Acox with 12 and D’Mya Tucker and Jordyn Dorsey with 10 apiece. Acox added six rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block to round out her best performance this season. For Stony Brook, Annie Warren tallied a game-high 25 points, including five three-pointers, while Sherese Pittman recorded 20 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Towson 69, Delaware 66 | Box Score
Towson was the lone road team victorious Friday night, earning a 69-66 win over Delaware to extend its winning streak to four games. Towson used a big third-quarter effort, outscoring the Blue Hens 23-10 out of the break to make its mark on the contest. The Tigers trailed 37-29 at halftime but shot 53.3 percent (8-15) in the third quarter, using a 13-3 run to gain an eight-point lead before taking a 52-47 lead into the fourth. Towson forced Delaware into 26 turnovers, scoring 27 points off the Blue Hens’ miscues while only turning it over 14 times themselves. Skye Williams scored a game-high 16 points for the Tigers, while Kylie Kornegay-Lucas contributed 14, and Patricia Anumgba tallied 13. Kornegay-Lucas added six steals, four rebounds and four assists in the effort, while Anumgba had four rebounds and four steals. Delaware had a balanced attack offensively, with four players in double figures. Nakiya Mays-Prince led the team with 12 points, joined by Kharis Idom, Makayla Pippin and Michelle Ojo with 10 points each.
Charleston 70, Monmouth 65 | Box Score
Charleston won its second straight game, topping Monmouth 70-65 to win back-to-back games and get back to .500 (3-3) in conference play. The Cougars scored 25 points off 23 Monmouth turnovers, while the Hawks tallied just 10 points off 10 Charleston miscues. The largest lead for either team was seven points in a tightly contested game all night. Charleston scored the final five points in the third quarter, including a second-chance layup with 16 seconds remaining that gave them a 48-47 lead. The Cougars carried the momentum into the fourth, outscoring the Hawks 22-18 in the final period to secure the victory. Jada Logan led all scorers with 27 points, adding five steals, four rebounds and three assists for the Cougars. Anika McGarity and Jaila Roberts reached double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively, while Adaora Onwumelu grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Ariana Vanderhoop led Monmouth, recording her first double-double this season with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Bri Tinsley and Lucy Thomas each contributed 13 points with six rebounds.
UNCW 62, Elon 58 | Box Score
UNCW snapped a 23-game losing streak in CAA play following its first conference victory this season, defeating Elon 62-58. After going toe-to-toe for most of the first half, Jayde Gamble knocked down a jumper with five seconds remaining in the second quarter to give UNCW a 34-32 edge at the break. The Seahawks came out of the break firing on all cylinders, shooting 53.8 percent (7-13) in the third to outscore Elon 16-9 in the frame. It made the difference in the game, giving UNCW enough cushion to hold on down the stretch. Gambel paced UNCW, matching her career-high with 20 points. Lexi Jackson nearly recorded a double-double, adding 11 points and nine rebounds, along with four blocks. Lenaejha Evans had a team-high 16 points for Elon, marking her team-best 11th double-digit scoring output this season. The teams combined to make 41 free throws in the contest. Elon went 19-of-23 from the charity stripe, while UNCW knocked down 22-of-26 from the free throw line.
