#CAAHoops MBB Recap – Jan. 21 – Charleston’s Streak Hits 20, Road Teams Go 5-1

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 21, 2023) – No. 18 Charleston ran its winning streak to 20, Drexel clamped down in overtime to improve to 6-2 in league play, and Towson’s strong road performance placed the Dragons and Tigers in a three-way tie with idle Hofstra in the CAA Men’s Basketball standings.
Elsewhere around the league, a hot start for Hampton, late run by North Carolina A&T, and strong second half by UNCW contributed to a 5-1 day for road teams.
18/21 Charleston 87, Northeastern 61
No. 18 Charleston closed the first half on a 19-5 run and led by as many as 32 points in the second half en route to the Cougars’ 20
th-straight victory. Charleston (21-1, 9-0) shot 47% for the game and 36% from three to remain perfect halfway through its league schedule.
Ben Burnham knocked down three of the Cougars’ nine three-pointers to lead Charleston with 15 points in 19 minutes of action, while
Pat Robinson III and
Ryan Larson added 12 each with Larson scoring seven points in the game’s first three minutes. Charleston secured 46 rebounds with a +8 advantage after Northeastern limited each of its last two opponents to 19 boards.
Chris Doherty led the way for Northeastern (8-11, 4-4) with a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds.
UNCW 62, Stony Brook 51
Maleeck Harden-Hayes scored 31 points, powered by a run of four made threes in four possessions, to awaken the offense for UNCW (16-6, 6-3) and earn the Seahawks a split of their trip to Long Island. UNCW trailed 23-22 before Harden-Hayes knocked down a three-pointer on four consecutive trips down the floor over a stretch of 1:56 to give UNCW a 34-23 advantage. Stony Brook (7-13, 3-4) responded with a 13-2 stretch to pull even, but UNCW scored the next six and led the rest of the way.
Toby Onyekonwu led three Seawolves in double figures with 11 points along with five assists. Harden-Hayes scored 25 of his 31 in the second half and shot 8-of-11 from the field, 5-of-7 from three, and 10-of-10 at the foul line.
Drexel 77, Delaware 74 (OT)
The lead changed hands six times in the final two minutes of regulation to force overtime and two key blocks by
Amari Williams helped Drexel (12-8, 6-2) hold Delaware (11-10, 3-5) to one point in the extra session for a Dragons win in front of a sold-out DAC. Williams notched 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting, six rebounds, and five blocks for Drexel, with shot 52% as a team and led for nearly 35 minutes.
Justin Moore led Drexel with 21 points and
Luke House added 19 to power the Dragons to their first start of 6-2 or better in the CAA since the 2011-12 squad that went 16-2.
Jyáre Davis (28) and
Jameer Nelson Jr. (21) combined for 49 of Delaware’s 74 points.
North Carolina A&T 90, William & Mary 86
North Carolina A&T and William & Mary were tied at 66 with six minutes remaining before a dunk-fueled 15-0 run led the Aggies to victory.
Marcus Watson scored a game-high 28 points with 20 in the second half for A&T (10-12, 5-4), as the Aggies grabbed the lead for good after 11 ties and 12 lead changes in the first 35 minutes. Watson scored seven of the points in A&T’s 15-point run to take control of the game and added five rebounds and seven assists to his scoring output. William & Mary (8-13, 3-5) pulled to within three in the final minute, but the Aggies prevailed in part by making their final 11 field goals on a 53% night shooting.
Noah Collier tallied 22 points and 16 rebounds for the Tribe, which outrebounded A&T 46-36. A&T is 4-1 on the road in CAA play.
Hampton 83, Monmouth 66
Hampton (4-16, 1-7) shot 76% in the first half and 58% for the game to earn its first win in CAA play.
Marquis Godwin scored 13 of his 21 points in the first half and was 8-of-11 shooting for the game along with 5-of-6 from three, while
Deuce Dean added 21 points in the contest including 13 in the first 20 minutes. Monmouth (1-19, 0-7) got to within five and again six, but Hampton responded with the next eight to put the game out of reach.
Myles Foster led the Hawks with a game-high 22 points.
Towson 66, Elon 62
Nicolas Timberlake tallied 24 points to help Towson (14-7, 6-2) hold off Elon and move the Tigers into a three-way tie for second in the CAA standings. Elon (2-18, 0-7) started the game on an 8-0 run before Towson ran off 13 straight points to take control at 24-18 with 7:52 to play in the first half. Towson led 40-26 at the break with Timberlake scoring 14 of his 24 points in the opening 20 minutes. Towson went 11-of-26 (42%) from three with Timberlake going 5-for-9.
Jerald Gillens-Butler scored 14 points and
Max Mackinnon added 12 for Elon, which outrebounded Towson 35-34.
