#CAAHoops WBB Recap – Jan. 22 – Road Warriors Post 5-1 Record in Sunday’s Slate

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 22, 2023) – The road warriors of the CAA prevailed on Sunday as the visitors posted a 5-1 record in CAA women’s basketball action. Four games were decided by less than 10 points, with two going into overtime. Towson, the lone home team victorious, extended its winning streak to five games and moved into a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings.   
 
Towson 70, Drexel 61 | Box Score 
Towson extended its winning streak to five games on Sunday, defeating Drexel 70-61. Much like Friday, the turning point came in the third quarter for the Tigers. Leading by three, Drexel pushed its lead to seven before Towson went on a 9-0 to reclaim the lead. The Tigers proceeded to outscore the Dragons 19-10 in the frame and gain a six-point lead at the end of three. Towson led by at least five for the remainder of the contest, pushing its advantage to double-digits four times in the final quarter. Four of Towson’s five starters scored in double figures, with Skye Williams recording a team-high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 4-for-4 from three. Kylie Kornegay-Lucas and Alexia Nelson added 13 points each, while Quinzia Fulmore contributed 10. Kornegay-Lucas and Fulmore also recorded seven rebounds in the contest. Keishana Washington paced Drexel with a game-high 27 points, marking her 52nd straight game in double figures and 14th this season with 20 or more.  
 
William & Mary 80, Charleston 74 (OT) | Box Score 
William & Mary prevailed 80-74 over Charleston in overtime to win its third consecutive game and earn its first road victory in CAA play. The Tribe needed a 6-0 run in the final 2:09 of regulation to force overtime, which turned into a 13-1 run as William & Mary opened a five-point lead two minutes into the extra frame. The Tribe maintained the edge and iced the charity stripe, going 6-for-6 at the free throw line in the final 17 seconds of overtime. Four players for each team scored in double figures as William & Mary shot 42.4 percent (28-66) from the floor and 34.3 percent (12-35) from three, while Charleston connected at a 35.7 percent (25-70) clip from the field and 32.0 percent (8-25) from deep. Riley Casey led all scorers with 26 points, while Sydney Wagner added 20 points for the Tribe. Rebekah Frisby-Smith contributed 12 points with a team-high nine rebounds, and Bre Bellamy tallied 10 points to round out the William & Mary scorers in double figures. Jada Logan nearly recorded her second triple-double this season for Charleston, scoring a team-high 17 points with 12 rebounds and nine assists. Additionally, Jaila Roberts had 15 points, Anika McGarity scored 13, and Adaora Onwumelu added 10 points and seven rebounds. 
 
North Carolina A&T 75, Hampton 70 (OT) | Box Score 
North Carolina A&T improved to 4-0 in conference road games, but it was no easy task, topping long-time rival Hampton 75-70 in overtime on Sunday. After trailing the majority of the first half, the Aggies ended the second quarter on a 9-2 run to tie the game, 30 all, at the half. The teams went blow-for-blow in the second half, as neither team led by more than four points in the third or fourth quarter. North Carolina A&T took the lead with 1:05 remaining in regulation before Madison Buford forced overtime with a three-pointer in the final 17 seconds. In overtime, the Aggies scored the first five points in the extra frame, which proved to be the final margin of victory. Maleia Bracone led all scorers with a career-high 29 points, shooting 10-of-15 from the floor and 7-of-10 from deep for the Aggies. Jazmin Harris contributed 12 points, while D’Mya Tucker added 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Nylah Young led Hampton with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Victoria Mason tallied 16 points, five assists and five steals for the Lady Pirates. Camryn Hilla and Dlayla Chakolis rounded out the Hampton scorers in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. 
 
Monmouth 55, UNCW 52 | Box Score 
Monmouth snapped a three-game skid with a hard-fought road victory over UNCW 55-52 on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks sprinted to an early lead, gaining a 20-13 advantage after the first quarter but went cold for the next 20 minutes. UNCW outscored Monmouth 21-10 in the second and third quarters to take a 34-30 lead into the fourth. However, Monmouth snapped out of its funk, shooting 69.2 percent (9-13) in the fourth quarter, and outscored the Seahawks 25-18 in the final frame to emerge victoriously. Ariana Vanderhoop paced Monmouth with a career-high 24 points. She went 9-of-14 from the floor, adding a team-high eight rebounds. Belle Kranbuhl contributed 10 points with six rebounds for the Hawks and recorded a block for the 17th straight game. Carrie Gross tallied a career-best 25 points for UNCW, while Jayde Gamble chipped in 12. 
 
Stony Brook 70, Elon 56 | Box Score
Stony Brook bounced back from a setback on Friday with a 70-56 win over Elon on Sunday. It seemed as if the Seawolves were going to run away in the first half, outscoring Elon 23-6 in the first quarter, leading by as many as 23 in the second and maintaining an 18-point advantage at halftime. However, the Phoenix made a game of it in the third, using a 22-6 run to cut the deficit to two before Stony Brook took a four-point lead into the fourth. Stony Brook responded with a 22-point quarter, outscoring the Phoenix by 10 in the final frame. The Seawolves backcourt duo of Annie Warren and Gigi Gonzalez combined for 37 points, Warren scoring a game-high 19 and Gonzalez adding 18 points and five assists. Sherese Pittman contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds for Stony Brook, recording her fourth double-double this season. Raven Preston and Evonna McGill each scored 13 points to lead Elon offensively, while Preston added a team-best nine rebounds just shy of a double-double. 
 
Northeastern 68, Hofstra 48 | Box Score
Northeastern won its second straight game and fourth in the past five games following a 68-48 win over Hofstra. After a slow start, Northeastern outscored the Pride 21-11 in the second quarter to gain a 33-24 advantage at halftime. The Huskies carried the momentum in the third, outpacing Hofstra 21-10 in the frame to open a 20-point lead, which would be the final margin of victory. Three Northeastern players reached double figures led by Derin Erdogan and Deja Bristol with 16 apiece. Bristol was 8-of-9 from the floor to establish a new career-high in points while adding five rebounds. JaMiya Braxton rounded out the Huskies in double figures with 13. For the Pride, Emma Von Essen scored a team-high 13 points with three rebounds and one assist. Northeastern shot 54.2 percent (26-48) from the floor, including a season-high 55.6 percent (10-18) from three, while holding Hofstra to 31.0 percent (18-58) from the field and 29.6 percent (8-27) from distance.
