#CAAHoops WBB Recap – Jan. 27 – Washington Surpasses 2,000 Career Points; Elon Wins at the Buzzer

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 27, 2023) – Keishana Washington scored 24 points to lead all scorers on Friday night, becoming the ninth player in CAA Women’s Basketball history to surpass 2,000 career points. Second place on Drexel’s all-time scoring list, the graduate guard also set a program record with her 53rd consecutive game in double figures. Additionally, Towson and William & Mary extended their respective winning streaks to six and four games, Monmouth won its second straight contest, and Elon earned its first win in league play with a three-pointer at the buzzer.  
 
Elon 63, Delaware 60 | Box Score 
Raven Preston banked home a three as time expired to give Elon a 63-60 win over Delaware and its first conference victory this season. Trailing by one at the half, the Phoenix outscored the Blue Hens 15-10 out of the break to gain a 43-39 advantage. Elon held Delaware to 26.7 percent (4-15) shooting in the frame as the Phoenix took hold of the momentum. Elon held the lead for the first eight minutes in the fourth quarter, but the Blue Hens would not go away quietly. Delaware tied the game with 1:59 remaining, again with 1:28 on the clock and finally with five seconds before Preston hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer. Preston led Elon with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting with six rebounds. Ajia James tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double this season, while Kamryn Doty and Evonna McGill added 13 points each. For Delaware, Jewel Smalls had a team-high 12 points, Klarke Sconiers added 11 points, and Tara Cousins contributed 10 points. Elon shot 51.0 percent (26-51) in the contest, its third-highest shooting percentage this year while holding Delaware to 38.9 percent (21-54) shooting from the floor.  
 
Towson 73, Northeastern 67 | Box Score
Towson extended its winning streak to six games following a 73-67 road victory over Northeastern. The Tigers looked like they were shot out of a cannon in the first quarter, which was cruical to the win. Towson shot 10-of-18 (55.6%) from the floor in the first, including 4-of-6 from three as the Tigers outscored Northeastern 26-14 in the opening frame. Towson extended its lead by one heading into halftime, but the Huskies responded in the third. Northeastern outscored Towson 20-13 out of the break to climb within six heading into the fourth. The Huskies cut the deficit to 69-67 with 23 seconds remaining, but Towson hit four free throws in the final 14 seconds to seal the victory. Five Tigers scored in double figures, including four starters. Anissa Rivera led the way with 16 points, while Kylie Kornegay-Lucas recorded her third double-double this season with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Patricia Anumgba added 14 points, and Alexa Nelson and India Johnston each tallied 10. Derin Erdogan was terrific for the Huskies, scoring a game-high 21 points with five assists. Additionally, Gemima Motema added 15 points off the bench in her first action since January 8. 
 
Drexel 69, Hofstra 57 | Box Score
Drexel snapped a brief two-game skid and remained perfect on its home court this season, defeating Hofstra 69-57. The Dragons used a fast start to build an early lead and had a response for every Hofstra run down the stretch. Drexel shot 60.0 percent (9-15) in the first quarter to gain a 22-13 lead. They outscored Hofstra 14-11 in the second to extend their advantage to 12 at the break, which proved to be the final margin of victory. It was a balanced attack for Drexel as all eight players to see the court scored in the contest, including five with eight or more and three in double figures. Washington led the way with 24 points, while Hetta Saatman and Kylie Lavelle contributed 10 apiece. In addition, Maura Hendrixson recorded her sixth game this season with 10 or more assists, tallying 11. Hofstra also had three players in double figures, led by Sorelle Ineza with 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting. Alarice Gooden added 11 points, and Rosi Nicholson tallied 10 in reserve minutes for the Pride. 
 
Monmouth 69, Hampton 56 | Box Score 
Monmouth earned back-to-back wins with a 69-56 victory over Hampton on Friday night. The Lady Pirates scored the opening basket, but it was all Hawks from that point forward, as Monmouth led for over 38 minutes in the contest. The Hawks gained a 19-14 lead after the first quarter before Hampton cut the Hawks’ lead to two at halftime. However, Monmouth turned the dial back up in the second half, outscoring Hampton 35-24 over the final 20 minutes. Lucy Thomas scored a team-high 12 points off the bench, while Ariana Vanderhoop recorded her second double-double in the past three games with 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Hawks. Jania Hall added a season-high 10 points for Monmouth, while Belle Kranbuhl pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. Camryn Hill and Nylah Young paced Hampton with 16 points apiece, with Jermany Mapp adding 14. Monmouth outrebounded Hampton 47-27 in the contest and converted 20 free throws compared to four for the Lady Pirates. 
 
William & Mary 62, UNCW 48 | Box Score 
William & Mary cruised to its fourth straight victory with a 62-48 win over UNCW as the Tribe improved to 4-0 at Kaplan Arena during conference play. Despite offensive struggles from time to time, William & Mary scored 15 points off 23 UNCW turnovers, while the Seahawks only tallied six points off 10 Tribe miscues. William & Mary scored the opening basket and led wire-to-wire. The Tribe outscored UNCW 14-4 in the first and 12-7 in the third, helping William & Mary gain an 18-point lead after three quarters that would be too much for UNCW to overcome. Sydney Wagner scored a team-best 13 points, recording her eighth consecutive game in double figures and 16th this season. Rebekah Frisby-Smith was the second Tribe player in double figures with 10 points, while Alexa Mikeska grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds. Jayde Gamble scored a game-high 16 points to lead UNCW, and Carrie Gross tallied 12 points joining Gamble in double figures.
