#CAAHoops MBB Recap – Jan. 28 – Hofstra Snaps Nation’s Longest Winning Streak as Part of Wild Saturday

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 28, 2023) –Hofstra snapped the nation’s longest winning streak, two teams earned their first wins of CAA play, and Towson’s Cam Holden notched a triple-double in an eventful Saturday around the league.
 
Hofstra 85, No. 18 Charleston 81
Four Hofstra players scored 15+ points as the Pride snapped the nation’s longest winning streak and pulled within one game of the Cougars for first place. Aaron Estrada scored a game-high 25 points for Hofstra (15-8, 8-2), while Darlinstone Dubar added 18, Tyler Thomas contributed 17, and Jaquan Carlos chipped in with 15. The contest featured 13 lead changes, but Hofstra grabbed the advantage for good with a 7-0 stretch with 15 minutes remaining. Hofstra defeated an AP Top 25 opponent for the second-straight season after earning a win at No. 24 Arkansas last year. Ante Brzovic scored 18 points to lead four players in double figures for Charleston (21-2, 9-1), which entered the game as winners of its last 20.
 
Towson 92, William & Mary 73
Cam Holden’s triple-double helped Towson rebound from an early deficit to win its sixth-straight game and move within one game of first-place Charleston. Holden tallied 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists to lead five players in double figures for Towson (16-7, 8-2), as the Tigers also received a 20-point effort from Charles Thompson. William & Mary (9-14, 4-6) opened the game on an 11-2 run but Towson responded to move in front for good as part of a 10-0 stretch late in the first half. Anders Nelson scored 22 points for the Tribe as part of a weekend in which he shot 15-of-16 overall and 9-of-10 from three.
 
Elon 72, Drexel 58
Elon shot 56% and had four players in double figures to earn the Phoenix its first victory of league play. Elon (3-19, 1-8) led for nearly 36 minutes and was powered by an 18-point effort from Sean Halloran along with efforts from Jerald Gillens-Butler (14), Max Mackinnon (14), and Sam Sherry (11). Elon led by seven at the break before opening the second half on a 13-4 run to take control. Amari Williams led all scorers with 23 points for Drexel (12-10, 6-4).
 
Monmouth 79, North Carolina A&T 64
Tahron Allen scored a career-high 23 points to lead four Hawks in double figures and earn Monmouth its first CAA victory. Monmouth (2-20, 1-8) shot 52% in the first half and 55% in the final 20 minutes to lead for 36 minutes of the contest. The Hawks extended their lead to 18 points at 55-37 before North Carolina A&T (11-3, 6-5) chipped away to get back within seven on a 13-2 run. Monmouth responded to push the lead back to double digits and utilized just one made three in the final 15 minutes on a night it held a 36-18 advantage in the paint. Marcus Watson contributed a game-high 25 points for the Aggies.
 
Delaware 81, Northeastern 78
Four Blue Hens were in double figures, led by 21 points from Jameer Nelson Jr., as a shorthanded Delaware squad earned a season split. Delaware (12-11, 4-6) led for the final 26 minutes with Nelson’s 21 and Gianmarco Arletti stepping up with 18 for the Blue Hens, who were without the services of Jyáre Davis. Northeastern (8-13, 4-6) chipped away at a double-digit deficit thanks to Coleman Stucke, who scored 26 of his career-high 34 points in the second half. Stucke, who entered the game with a career-high of 19 points on Thursday, was 12-of-19 from the field and 6-of-13 from three.
 
Stony Brook 71, Hampton 66
A 29-9 Stony Brook start to the second half with 24 of them from Frankie Policelli lifted the Seawolves to a road victory. Stony Brook (8-14, 4-5) trailed by seven at the break before Policelli took over, scoring 24 of his game-high 34 points that came with 12 rebounds for his league-leading eighth double-double of the year. Both teams limited themselves to six turnovers in the contest and Stony Brook overcame 15 offensive rebounds from Hampton (5-17, 2-8). Kyrese Mullen led the Pirates with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
