#CAAHoops WBB Recap – Jan. 29 – Top Three in CAA Standings Victorious on Sunday

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 29, 2023) – North Carolina A&T returned to action and remained atop the CAA standings following a victory on Sunday. Drexel and Stony Brook, tied for second, earned victories to keep pace one game behind the Aggies. The Seawolves’ win came over Towson, who was in a three-way tie for second entering play today. In addition, Delaware, Northeastern and Hampton got back in the win column on Sunday.
Delaware 74, William & Mary 72 | Box Score
Delaware snapped a two-game skid with a 74-72 victory over William & Mary, ending the Tribe’s four-game winning streak. William & Mary gained a 19-14 lead after the first quarter, but Delaware ended the second frame on a 15-5 run to tie the game 35-35 at halftime. No team led by more than six in the third quarter as William & Mary gained a one-point advantage heading into the fourth. The margin was even tighter in the final frame, with Delaware scoring the first five points to gain a 57-53 lead, which would be the largest in the quarter. Trailing by one, Delaware regained the lead on a Tara Cousins jumper 71-70 with 1:13 remaining. On the ensuing possession, Sydney Wagner scored two of her game-high 33 points to give the Tribe the lead right back. Out of a timeout, Klarke Sconiers was fouled and knocked down a pair of free throws, while Jewel Smalls added a free throw in the final 30 seconds to lift Delaware. Four Blue Hens scored in double figures, led by Sconiers with 18 points. Kharis Idom added 15 points and five assists, Smalls tallied 11 points with nine rebounds, and Cousins contributed 10 points. Wagner’s 33 points were a career-high for the graduate guard.
Northeastern 75, Monmouth 70 | Box Score
Northeastern bounced back from a loss on Friday with a 75-70 win over Monmouth on Sunday to split the season series. The Huskies turned a five-point halftime deficit into a five-point win by outscoring Monmouth 41-31 in the second half. Northeastern gained a two-point lead after the first quarter, but the Hawks outscored the Huskies 25-18 to take the lead into the break. Northeastern shot 80.0 percent (8-10) in the third quarter and held Monmouth to 28.6 percent (4-14) shooting, helping the Huskies gain a 53-52 lead at the end of three. Tied at 64 with 3:35 remaining, Northeastern scored three straight points, including the go-ahead basket from JaMiya Braxton, and led the rest of the way. Monmouth got within one on three occasions, but Northeastern sealed the game with a second-chance layup and a pair of free throws in the final 13 seconds. Four Huskies reached double figures as Northeastern shot a blistering 65.2 percent (30-46) from the field for a new season high. Gemima Motema paced Northeastern with 19 points, Braxton contributed 14, while Derin Erdogan and Ariana Webb added 11 apiece. Kaci Donovan led all scorers with a career-high 24 points for Monmouth and was joined in double figures by Ariana Vanderhoop and Lucy Thomas, who tallied 15 points each.
North Carolina A&T 76, Charleston 71 | Box Score
North Carolina A&T improved to 8-1 in CAA play, remaining atop the conference standings following a 76-71 over Charleston. A highly competitive first three quarters saw the teams enter the fourth tied at 57. The Aggies outscored the Cougars 19-14 in the fourth quarter, including a 10-0 run over the final 2:31 to emerge victoriously. North Carolina A&T trailed by one after the first quarter but took a three-point lead into halftime after outscoring Charleston 18-14 in the second. The Cougars responded in a high-scoring third outpacing the Aggies 25-22 to tie the contest. Jordyn Dorsey paced the Aggies with a career-high 21 points and shot 7-of-10 from the floor with four rebounds and four assists. Jazmin Harris recorded her seventh double-double this season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while D’Mya Tucker tallied a season-high 18 points. Jalia Roberts and Jada Logan recorded their second straight 20-point performances for Charleston. Roberts had a game-high 23 points with seven rebounds and Logan added 22 points. The game featured 14 lead changes and seven ties. The Aggies lead for 18:13, while Charleston maintained an advantage for 15:56.
Stony Brook 83, Towson 66 | Box Score
Stony Brook earned its third consecutive victory and ended Towson’s six-game winning streak as the Seawolves defeated the Tigers 83-66. The teams battled for three quarters, with Stony Brook leading by two after the first, four at the half and three heading into the fourth; however, the Seawolves shot 62.5 percent (10-16) in the final frame to outscore Towson 26-12 in the quarter, while holding the Tigers to 25.0 percent (4-16) shooting to secure the victory. For the second straight game, Stony Brook had three players with at least 20 points. Shamarla King paced the Seawolves with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting with 10 rebounds for her first double-double this season. Gigi Gonzalez added 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds, while Sherese Pittman contributed 20 points and eight rebounds. Quinzia Fulmore recorded her fourth double-double this season with 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead Towson.
Drexel 61, Elon 49 | Box Score
Drexel remained the only CAA team unbeaten on its home court this season, improving to 10-0 at the DAC following a 61-49 win over Elon. After Elon scored the first four points of the game, Drexel went on an 11-0 run and never trailed the rest of the way. The Dragons limited Elon to 27.3 percent shooting and three field goals in the first quarter, gaining a 17-8 advantage. Elon climbed within four in the third quarter, but Drexel pushed its lead to as many as 14 in the fourth as the Dragons seemingly had an answer for every Phoenix run. Keishana Washington scored a game-high 16 points, marking her 54th consecutive game in double figures. Chloe Hodges had a career day for the Dragons, going 6-of-6 from the floor with a career-high 15 points and a career-best eight rebounds. Two players also reached double figures for the Phoenix as Evonna McGill led the team with 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting and matched a team-high with six rebounds. Lenaejha Evans added 10 for Elon.
Hampton 74, Hofstra 55 | Box Score
Hampton returned to the win column, snapping a three-game skid with a 74-55 victory over Hofstra. The Lady Pirates trailed by one at halftime but outscored the Pride 43-23 in the second half to earn the win. Hampton recorded a layup as time expired in the second quarter and carried that momentum into the third as it ignited a 14-0 run that gave Hampton a double-digit lead in the third. The Lady Pirates went on to outscore the Pride 27-10 in the third quarter, shooting 61.1 percent (11-18) in the frame while limiting Hofstra to 20.0 percent (2-10) shooting. A balanced attack for Lady Pirates saw six players score at least seven points. Jermany Mapp led the way with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting, and Nylah Young tallied 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting with seven rebounds. It marks the third straight game in double figures for Young and the third in the past four games for Mapp. For the Pride, Brandy Thomas scored a game-high 20 points and added 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double this season. Sorelle Ineza was also in double figures with 10 points for her second straight double-digit scoring output.
