#CAAHoops MBB Recap – Jan. 5 – Stony Brook Improves to 2-0; Hofstra, Towson, William & Mary Pick Up Wins

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 5, 2023) – A double-digit road win earned CAA newcomer Stony Brook a 2-0 start to the year, while Hofstra, Towson, and William & Mary were also in the win column in Thursday’s action.
Stony Brook 67, Monmouth 56
Stony Brook built a double-digit lead at the half as a three-pronged offensive attack powered the Seawolves to a 2-0 start in their inaugural CAA campaign.
Frankie Policelli scored a game-high 17 points and
Kaine Roberts and
Tyler Stephenson-Moore added 15 each with Roberts’ output a career high. Stony Brook outrebounded Monmouth 42-37 and knocked down 10 threes to win for the fourth time in its last six contests.
Andrew Ball led Monmouth with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Towson 64, Drexel 58
Nicolas Timberlake scored a game-high 24 points and Towson jumped out to a 17-point lead before withstanding a Drexel comeback bid as the Tigers improved to 9-6 on the year. Towson extended its advantage with a 9-0 stretch before a 13-0 run for Drexel got the game back within three with 6:25 to go. Towson would respond with a 10-3 spurt to regain control of the contest. Timberlake was 9-of-15 from the floor with a pair of three-pointers, while Towson made 6-of-15 threes overall and held Drexel to 29% from distance.
Mate Okros led the Dragons with 14 points.
Hofstra 67, Hampton 51
Hofstra held Hampton to 28% shooting and was +15 on the glass to improve to 2-1 in the CAA and win its ninth game of the year.
Aaron Estrada led all scorers with 20 points and added seven rebounds and five assists while playing all but 17 seconds.
Tyler Thomas (16),
Darlinstone Dubar (13), and
Warren Williams (12) joined him in double figures while grabbing a combined 17 rebounds.
Jordan Nesbitt led Hampton with 14 points while adding five rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
William & Mary 69, Northeastern 66
William & Mary forced 17 turnovers and put together a key 6-0 run in the closing minutes to even its CAA record at 1-1. The Tribe led 60-59 with five minutes to play before scoring the next six fueled by a pair of baskets from
Ben Wight and outlasted a battle from the Huskies in the closing seconds.
Anders Nelson led three W&M players in double figures with 16 points, while
Coleman Stucke led all scorers with an 18-point, nine-rebound effort for the Huskies.
