#CAAHoops WBB Recap – Jan. 6 – Drexel, N.C. A&T and Stony Brook Move to 3-0 in League Play

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 6, 2023) – Drexel, North Carolina A&T and Stony Brook improved to 3-0 in league play following victories on Friday night, while Hampton remained perfect in conference, moving to 2-0. Additionally, Hofstra picked up its first CAA victory of the season.
Drexel 73, Delaware 57 | Box Score
Drexel improved to 3-0 in conference play after a rematch of the past two CAA Tournament finals, avenging last season’s defeat in the CAA Championship game with a 73-57 win over Delaware. Keishana Washington scored a game-high 30 points to lead Drexel to victory, marking her seventh performance this season with 30 or more. One game after setting the Drexel single-game program record for assists, Maura Hendrixson was one shy of her previous effort with a game-high 13. It is her third game this year with double-digit assists, while no other player in the conference has more than one such performance. The Blue Hens had a pair of scorers in double figures led by Michelle Ojo, who scored 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. Klarke Sconiers added 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting for Delaware. Drexel forced the Blue Hens into 21 turnovers while only committing eight as the Dragons edged Delaware in points off turnovers 17-6.
North Carolina A&T 68, Monmouth 52 | Box Score
In the only matchup of teams unbeaten in conference play on Friday night, North Carolina A&T prevailed 68-52 over Monmouth, improving to 3-0 in league play after an impressive road victory. The Aggies erased a nine-point halftime deficit, outscoring Monmouth 43-18 in the second half. North Carolina A&T shot 54.5 percent (18-33) from the floor after halftime while holding Monmouth to 21.7 percent (5-23) shooting and just five made field goals. After tying the game at 48 at the end of the third, the Aggies outscored the Hawks 20-4 in the fourth quarter, including an 18-2 run over the final 8:22. Jazmin Harris tallied her fourth consecutive double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds to led four Aggies in double figures. D’Mya Tucker and Jordyn Dorsey added 11 points each, while Nyah Willis tallied 10 off the bench. Lucy Thomas nearly recorded a double-double for the Hawks, leading the team with 14 points and nine rebounds in 28 minutes as a reserve.
Stony Brook 75, UNCW 54 | Box Score
Stony Brook remained perfect in CAA play, improving to 3-0 after a 75-54 win over UNCW. The Seawolves got off to a fast start, opening a 21-13 lead after the first quarter and outscored UNCW in all four quarters. Stony Brook extended its lead to 36-20 at the half, holding the Seahawks to seven points in the second quarter to cap a strong first half before cruising in the final 20 minutes. Annie Warren paced Stony Brook with a game-high 23 points, while Sherese Pittman added 12 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Additionally, Kelis Corley contributed a career-high 12 points off the bench for the Seawolves. For UNCW, Jayde Gamble had a team-best 14 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor, while Lexi Jackson tallied 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting and a game-high eight rebounds.
Hofstra 46, Elon 42 | Box Score
Hofstra earned its first CAA victory this season and improved to 6-1 at home following a 46-42 win over Elon. The Pride was suffocating on the defensive end of the court as they held Elon to a season-low 24.3 shooting percentage (17-70) for the game. Subsequently, Hofstra shot 42.9 percent (18-42) from the floor and 35.3 percent (6-18) from behind the arc. The Pride gained a 25-15 lead at the break thanks in part to limiting the Phoenix to five points in the first quarter. Elon made a push in the second half and cut the deficit to three points in the fourth quarter, but Hofstra was able to withstand the comeback attempt. Rosi Nicholson paced Hofstra with 12 points, while Brandy Thomas recorded a game-high 14 rebounds with nine points. Thomas is tied for the league lead with seven double-digit rebounding efforts this season. Raven Preston was the bright spot for the Phoenix, tallying a game-high 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting with a team-high eight rebounds.
Hampton 56, Charleston 50
Hampton moved to 2-0 in its inaugural CAA season following a 56-50 victory over Charleston. Hampton limited the Cougars to nine points in the first quarter, taking a 14-9 advantage after one. The Lady Pirates maintained the margin into halftime, leading 29-24 at the break. Charleston battled back in the third, cutting the deficit to two, but Hampton had its best performance in the fourth, outscoring Charleston 17-13 to secure the victory. The Hampton duo of Madison Buford and Amya Reaves posted season highs in points. Buford had a game-high 21 points for her seventh straight game in double figures, while Reaves contributed 10. Anika McGarity paced Charleston with 15 points, all of which came from behind the arc. Freshman Naylee Cortes added a season-high 11 points for the Cougars.
