#CAAHoops WBB Recap – Jan. 8 – Home Teams go 5-1 in Sunday Action

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 8, 2023) – Five of Sunday's six conference contests were decided by double-digits as home teams posted a 5-1 record. Drexel and North Carolina A&T remained perfect in league play, improving to 4-0, while Monmouth bounced back to move to 3-1. Northeastern won its second straight CAA contest, and two teams – Towson and William & Mary – earned their first conference wins this season.
Drexel 81, Stony Brook 64 | Box Score
Drexel earned a statement win over Stony Brook 81-64 for its seventh victory in a row and improved to 4-0 in conference play. The second and third quarters made the difference for the Dragons. Knotted at 20, Drexel outscored Stony Brook 27-8 in the second quarter to take a 47-28 lead at the break. The Dragons shot 62.5 percent (10-16) in the period and limited the Seawolves to 25.0 percent (3-12) shooting. Drexel carried the momentum to the third, scoring 19 points on 56.3 percent (9-16) shooting while holding Stony Brook to 10 points on 21.1 percent (4-19) from the floor. Stony Brook fought till the finish, outscoring the Dragons 25-16 in the final frame but could not overcome the deficit. Keishana Washington led all scorers with 27 points and moved into second place on Drexel’s all-time scoring list in the victory. Tori Hyduke recorded a career-high 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, and Maura Hendrixson tallied 11 assists for her third straight double-digit performance. Annie Warren paced Stony Brook with 18 points for her sixth straight game in double figures.
North Carolina A&T 63, Hofstra 44 | Box Score
North Carolina A&T extended its winning streak to five games and improved to 4-0 in CAA play following a 63-44 victory over Hofstra. North Carolina A&T forced Hofstra into 24 turnovers throughout the game, outscoring the Pride 33-16 in points off turnovers. The Aggies jumped out to a 14-7 lead after the first quarter, holding the Pride to 18.8 percent (3-16) shooting in the opening frame. Hofstra cut the deficit to six at halftime, but North Carolina A&T continued to excel in the second half of games, outscoring the Pride 34-21 over the final 20 minutes. Jazmin Harris led three Aggies in double figures with 16 points, adding six rebounds and two blocks. Maleia Bracone tallied 15 points, and D’Mya Tucker recorded 12 points with 11 rebounds for her second double-double this season. Emma Von Essen was the leading scorer for the Pride with nine points, going 3-of-5 from three-point range.
Monmouth 64, Elon 56 | Box Score
After dropping its first CAA contest on Friday, Monmouth bounced back with a 64-56 win over Elon, improving to 3-1 in league play. The Hawks trailed by three at the half but outscored the Phoenix 36-25 over the final 20 minutes to flip the script. Monmouth closed the third quarter on an 11-2 run and opened the fourth on an 8-0 run, outscoring Elon 19-2 over a crucial 7:10 during its second-half comeback. Bri Tinsley scored 17 of her game-high 20 points for Monmouth in the second half and tallied four rebounds with four assists in the contest. Elon had three players reach double figures, but it wasn’t enough on Sunday. Evonna McGill led the way with 16 points, followed by Raven Preston with 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds, and Lenaejha Evans added 13 points for the Phoenix.
William & Mary 81, Charleston 67 | Box Score
William & Mary shot the lights out at Kaplan Arena to earn its first CAA victory this season, defeating Charleston 81-67. The Tribe shot a season-high 54.4 percent (31-57) from the floor, knocked down a season-best 14 three-pointers, shooting 50.0 percent from behind the arc, yet another season-high for William & Mary. Subsequently, the Tribe defense held Charleston to 37.9 percent shooting (22-58) in the contest and, more importantly, 29.4 percent (5-17) from three-point range. Riley Casey paced William & Mary with 31 points, matching her career high. Casey shot 11-of-19 from the floor and 7-of-12 from three, adding five assists and two steals in the victory. Three others reached double figures for the Tribe, including Sydney Wagner (12), Rebekah Frisby-Smith (11) and Bre Bellamy (11). Jada Logan led Charleston with 17 points, while Jazmyn Stone added 15 points for the Cougars.
Towson 86, Hampton 47 | Box Score
Towson earned its first conference win this season and handed Hampton its first CAA loss as the Tigers defeated the Lady Pirates 86-47. The Towson defense was smothering as it held Hampton to 26.7 percent (16-60) shooting and its second-lowest point total of the year. On the offensive end, the Tigers scored a season-high in points and shot a season-best 51.7 percent (30-58) from the floor. Kylie Kornegay-Lucas led Towson with 20 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double this season, adding five assists in the victory. Quinzia Fulmore added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Tigers, while Skye Williams and Anissa Reivers also reached double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Madison Buford scored 18 points to pace the Lady Pirates, marking her eighth straight game with at least 10 points.
Northeastern 92, UNCW 51 | Box Score
Northeastern had an offensive outburst, scoring a season-high 92 points to win its second straight conference contest, topping UNCW 92-51. The Huskies shot a season-best 59.1 percent (39-66) from the floor and dominated inside, outscoring the Seahawks 54-26 in the paint. Northeastern scored the game's opening basket and never trailed in the contest, leading for 39:02. It was a balanced attack for Huskies, with five reaching double figures. Northeastern was led by Jamiya Braxton, scoring a season-high 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor. Halle Idowu added 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting, Oralye Kiefer also went 5-of-6 from the floor with 11 points, while Jaelyn Batts added 10 points on a perfect 5-of-5 day. For UNCW, Carrie Gross was the lone Seahawk in double figures, scoring a game-high 18 points.
