CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL
RICHMOND, Va. (Oct. 25, 2023) – Monmouth will face Stony Brook on Long Island and Northeastern will square off with William & Mary in Maryland to begin the 2023 CAA Women's Soccer Championship in Thursday's first round action.
The Hawks will face the Seawolves on Hofstra's turf at 4 p.m., while the Huskies and Tribe will meet at Tiger Field in Towson at 7 p.m. Both games can be seen on FloFC.
Stony Brook clinched the sixth and final seed on the regular season’s final day to join Towson, Hofstra, Monmouth, Northeastern, and William & Mary in the six-team field for the Championship.
Towson won the CAA regular season title with a 2-0 victory in Sunday’s head-to-head battle with Hofstra for the top seed. The Tigers are CAA regular season champions for the first time and surpass a previous program-best finish of a tie for fourth in the CAA in 2022. Towson is into the CAA Championship in back-to-back years for the first time since joining the league in 2002.
Hofstra makes its seventh-consecutive trip to the CAA Championship, is the defending champion, and has won five of the last six league titles. The Pride is a top-two seed for the fifth time in the last seven seasons and won last year’s title as the No. 8 seed.
Monmouth will be the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 Stony Brook on Thursday at 4 p.m. on Long Island. The Hawks were regular season champions in 2022 and have made the conference championship in both years as a league member, as have the Seawolves, who are the sixth-ranked team for the second-consecutive year. Monmouth defeated Stony Brook, 1-0, on September 24 in West Long Branch.
Northeastern earned the No. 4 seed and a matchup with No. 5 William & Mary on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Maryland. The Huskies have qualified for their 13
th straight CAA Championship – the conference’s longest active streak – while the Tribe is back for the second-straight year. Northeastern was the No. 3 seed in 2022 and hosted the CAA title game; W&M got in as the No. 7 seed a year ago. The matchup will be a rematch of Sunday’s meeting between the teams, won 2-1 by William & Mary in Williamsburg.
The winner of the Monmouth-Stony Brook game will take on Hofstra on Long Island, while the team to emerge from the Northeastern-William & Mary contest will face top-seeded Towson in Maryland. Both contests will be played on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Hofstra earned victories against both of its potential semifinal opponents in the regular season, defeating Stony Brook 2-1 in a September trip out to Suffolk County and blanking Monmouth 2-0 in New Jersey last Thursday. Towson split with the teams on its side of the bracket in recent matches, falling 1-0 to Northeastern on Oct. 15 and defeating William & Mary 3-0 last Thursday.
The highest remaining seed will host the title game of the 2023 CAA Women’s Soccer Championship on Saturday, Nov. 4 or Sunday, Nov. 5. The date and time of that contest will be set next Sunday. All five games of the championship can be seen on FloFC.
