HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. and TOWSON, Md. (Oct. 26, 2023) – Third-seeded Monmouth scored three goals late in the contest, while No. 5 seed William & Mary outlasted Northeastern in penalty kicks as the Hawks and Tribe advanced to Sunday’s CAA Women’s Soccer Championship Semifinals.
(3) Monmouth 3, (6) Stony Brook 0
Monmouth scored three times in a span of 10:02 in the second half to advance in the CAA Women’s Soccer Championship for the first time since joining the league, as the third-seeded Hawks used a late burst to get past No. 6 seed Stony Brook.
CAA Rookie of the Year
Liza Suydam factored into the two goals that followed, first scoring in the 83
rd minute and then setting up
Chloe Messer for a third Monmouth goal 70 seconds later.
Chloe Ferreira also assisted on Messer’s goal, leading
Suydam ahead of the pack before the freshman sent it across to Messer to finish off the afternoon’s scoring.
Monmouth held a 17-4 shot advance with seven of those tries on frame.
Nicolette Pasquarella made four saves for Stony Brook (6-6-6) with three coming before halftime;
Cassie Coster recorded one stop for Monmouth.
Monmouth advances to play No. 2 seed Hofstra on Sunday at 1 p.m. on Long Island; the Pride upended the Hawks in New Jersey last year’s quarterfinals and were victorious by a 2-0 margin last Thursday in West Long Branch.
(5) William & Mary 1, (4) Northeastern 1 (W&M advances, 7-6, in PKs)
William & Mary made all seven of its penalty kicks, with the clincher recorded by backup goalkeeper
Zoe Doughty, to advance to the CAA Semifinals for the first time since 2017.
Doughty, the 2021 CAA Goalkeeper of the Year, put home the deciding penalty to follow six successful William & Mary teammates and lift the Tribe to Sunday’s meeting with top-seeded Towson.
William & Mary (9-3-7) opened the scoring in the 30
th minute, advancing the ball ahead to
Molly Widderich, who sent a cross to the middle for an
Ivey Crain header to put the Tribe in front.
The Tribe would remain in front for nearly 50 minutes before
Vivian Akyirem answered for Northeastern (8-4-6), driving the ball from straightaway, just outside the 18, to bring Northeastern level in the 79
th minute.
Both teams made their first six penalty attempts before the Tribe capitalized on a seventh-round miss by the Huskies and Doughty converted on the game-winner.
William & Mary’s
Morgan Wood made three saves in the game and Northeastern’s
Holland Stam recorded two; Northeastern held a 14-9 shot advantage and 4-3 on goal.
The Tribe’s victory is its first in the CAA Championship since 2017, when W&M downed James Madison. It will be William & Mary’s 21
st appearance in the CAA Semifinals, which leads all league members. The result marks the first time since the 2020-21 spring season that Northeastern will not play in the league title game.
