#CAAHoops MBB Recap – Feb.11 – Drexel Battles for Key OT Win; Charleston, Hofstra Remain Tied for First

RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 11, 2023) – Drexel picked up a pivotal overtime win in the race for a top-four seed, while Charleston and Hofstra remained tied at the top by continuing their winning ways Saturday in CAA Men’s Basketball.
 
Drexel 73, Towson 66 (OT)
Lamar Oden Jr. led four Dragons in double figures with a 19-point, 12-rebound double-double and Luke House scored eight of his 18 points in overtime as Drexel remained undefeated at home in CAA play. Drexel (15-11, 9-5) trailed by four in the extra session before closing the game on a 13-2 run with 10 of the points from House and Oden Jr. Drexel shot 45% for the game and 20-for-21 (95%) at the free-throw line. Cam Holden led Towson (17-9, 9-4) with 25 points in the defeat. Both teams scored over 50% of their points in the paint. The result pulls Drexel within a half-game of Towson for the No. 4 seed and final bye to the quarterfinals of the CAA Championship.
 
Hofstra 86, Monmouth 57
Tyler Thomas scored a game-high 23 points and Jaquan Carlos contributed another all-around effort as Hofstra won for the 11th time in its last 12 games. Hofstra (19-8, 12-2) jumped out to a 9-0 lead and controlled throughout, leading by 21 at the half (37-16) before shooting 62% from the field and 10-for-14 (71%) in the second half. Carlos notched 8+ rebounds and 7+ assists for the third-straight game. Hofstra’s 24 assists were the most in a CAA game since Elon notched 25 against James Madison on Jan. 17, 2022. Monmouth (5-21, 4-9) was led by 11 points from Andrew Ball and had a four-game winning streak snapped.
 
Stony Brook 69, North Carolina A&T 59
Stony Brook trailed by 13 in the first half before battling back to earn a season-split with North Carolina A&T. Stony Brook (9-17, 5-8) battled back from a 23-10 deficit thanks to a +15 (49-34) advantage on the glass and 10 made threes for a win key to CAA Championship positioning. Keenan Fitzmorris and Tyler Stephenson-Moore scored 14 points each for Stony Brook, while Frankie Policelli added his league-leading 10th double-double of the year with 12 and 11. Kam Woods led North Carolina A&T (12-15, 7-7) with 18 points and seven rebounds in the defeat.
 
Elon 66, William & Mary 55
Max Mackinnon led the way with 22 points and nine rebounds as Elon won for the fourth time in its last five contests. Elon (6-20, 4-9) shot 50% and was +12 (40-28) on the boards while holding William & Mary (9-17, 4-9) to 35% shooting. Sean Halloran added 18 points and Sam Sherry chipped in with 14 for Elon, which held a 36-16 advantage on points in the paint. Tyler Rice led William & Mary with 13 points off the bench and the Tribe received 31 of its 55 points from its reserves in addition to being without starters Noah Collier and Gabe Dorsey.
 
Charleston 83, Hampton 70
Charleston rebounded from a 15-point deficit midway through the first half by responding with a 27-6 run and led the rest of the way to stay tied for first place. Pat Robinson III led all scorers with 30 points for Charleston (24-3, 12-2), while Ryan Larson added 17 points and six of Charleston’s 19 assists. Charleston’s bench outscored Hampton’s 45-2 in the contest with 30 from Robinson and 13 from Ben Burnham. Hampton (6-20, 3-10) had four players in double figures, led by a 20-point effort from Jordan Nesbitt.
 
UNCW 71, Northeastern 59
Trazarien White scored a game-high 23 points with seven rebounds and UNCW never trailed in its 20th win of the year. UNCW (20-7, 10-4) turned over Northeastern 19 times and made 28 of 36 free throws to improve to 10-2 at Trask Coliseum this winter. Jahmyl Telfort’s 18 points led three players for Northeastern (8-16, 4-9) in double figures. UNCW has won 20 games in back-to-back seasons for the third time in its Division I era. The Seahawks are 27-8 against CAA competition since the start of the 2021-22 season.
