#CAAHoops MBB Recap – Feb. 13 – Elon, William & Mary Win in Closing Seconds

RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 13, 2023) – Elon and William & Mary sealed home victories with made free throws in the final five seconds, Charleston erupted for 99 points, and Hofstra won its eighth-straight game as part of a 6-0 night for home teams in Monday’s CAA Men’s Basketball action.
 
William & Mary 68, Towson 66
Anders Nelson’s free throws with one second remaining provided the final margin for William & Mary in a home victory. William & Mary (10-17, 5-9) jumped out to a 20-8 lead before Towson (17-10, 9-5) battled back to lead by seven at the half. An 8-2 run from William & Mary to open the second half set up a series of lead changes before an 11-2 Towson stretch kept the Tribe without a field goal for nearly six minutes. A pair of Chris Mullins baskets tied it and Nelson’s free throws won it in the last of 11 lead changes. Ben Wight led William & Mary with 20 points, while Cam Holden paced Towson with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Elon 70, Hampton 68
Max Mackinnon led Elon with 18 points as the Phoenix improved to 5-1 in its last six games. Elon (7-20, 5-9) led by 17 before Hampton (6-21, 3-11) battled back to take the lead with 4:54 to play as part of a stretch in which the Pirates held the Phoenix scoreless for nearly six minutes. Elon would respond to close the game with a 7-2 run with the final five from Mackinnon to escape with the victory. Hampton shot 47% in the contest and was led by 15-point efforts from Marques Godwin and Jordan Nesbitt.
 
Delaware 71, Stony Brook 60
Delaware jumped out to a 20-point lead and held off a Stony Brook comeback for a key victory in the conference race. Delaware (13-14, 5-9) held a 52-32 advantage before a 20-6 run for Stony Brook (9-18, 5-9) got the Seawolves back within six. Stony Brook trailed by five before Delaware went 6-for-6 at the line in the final 74 seconds to seal the victory. Jameer Nelson Jr. led four Blue Hens in double figures with 23 points, while Tanahj Pettway was the top scorer for Stony Brook with a 20-point, seven-rebound effort.
 
Hofstra 66, Drexel 52
Hofstra won its eighth-straight game and remained tied at the top in CAA play. Hofstra (20-8, 13-2) shot 50% while holding Drexel (15-12, 9-6) to 35%. Aaron Estrada led the way for Hofstra with a 22-point, five-rebound, five-assist effort to help Speedy Claxton become the first coach in program history with 20+ wins in each of his first two seasons at the helm. Darlinstone Dubar added 16 points on 7-of-7 shooting for Hofstra, which led by eight at the half before extending its lead with the first six points out of the break. Amari Williams led Drexel with 13 points.
 
Monmouth 85, North Carolina A&T 71
A career night from Klemen Vuga led Monmouth to its fifth victory in its last six games. Monmouth (6-21, 5-9) led by 11 at the half and as many as 19 after the break thanks to a 29-point, nine-rebound showing from Vuga, who entered the night averaging 7.2 points per game. Jack Collins added 22 for Monmouth with five of the Hawks’ six made threes. Kam Woods scored a team-high 24 points for North Carolina A&T (12-16, 7-8). Both teams were successful at the free-throw line with Monmouth at 81% and A&T at 91%.
 
Charleston 99, Northeastern 63
Charleston shot better than 58% in both halves to cruise to victory and become the nation’s first team to get to 25 wins. Charleston (25-3, 13-2) had four scorers in double figures, led by a game-high 23 points from Ante Brzovic. The Cougars’ bench contributed 51 of the team’s 99 points with Ben Burnham (16) and reigning CAA Player of the Week Pat Robinson III (14) combining for 30. CofC had 11 players in the scoring column and seven who made a three-pointer, including the first of Frankie Idlett and Spencer Legg’s careers. Northeastern (8-17, 4-8) was led by 11 points from Jahmyl Telfort.
