#CAAHoops MBB Recap – Feb. 16 – UNCW and Stony Brook Grab Overtime Victories

RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 16, 2023) – UNCW and Stony Brook won overtime battles, while the top two in the CAA standings kept pace and an intriguing race in the middle of the standings remained even with three conference dates remaining.
UNCW 72, Drexel 71 (2OT)
Trazarien White notched 26 points and 12 rebounds to power UNCW to a double-overtime victory. UNCW (21-7, 11-4) led for less than 11 of the 50-minute contest and trailed by as many as 15 points before battling back to force two overtimes. White was 9-of-16 from the floor and 8-for-9 from the free-throw line, while
Nick Farrar added 19 points for the Seahawks. Drexel (15-13, 9-7) held a 44-35 rebounding advantage despite
Amari Williams departing in the second half after a 14-point, nine-rebound effort.
Yame Butler led Drexel with 25 points and added nine rebounds of his own.
Stony Brook 71, William & Mary 66 (OT)
Stony Brook responded after allowing the final seven points of regulation to score the first six of overtime and stayed a game clear of the five-team logjam below the Seawolves in the CAA standings. Stony Brook (10-18, 6-9) built an 11-point first half lead and trailed for only 48 seconds of the 45-minute contest at 7-6.
Tyler Stephenson-Moore led Stony Brook in the scoring column with 17 points, while
Frankie Policelli recorded his league-leading 11
th double-double.
Ben Wight led all scorers with 21 points along with nine rebounds for William & Mary (10-18, 5-10).
Northeastern 77, Monmouth 62
Jahmyl Telfort led Northeastern with 17 points and
Joe Pridgen corralled 19 rebounds to lead the Huskies to victory at Matthews Arena. Northeastern (9-17, 5-10) led for the final 32 minutes and was +11 (44-33) on the glass.
Klemen Vuga contributed another solid effort for Monmouth (6-22, 5-10) with 23 points after scoring 29 on Monday. The Huskies led by as many as 27 points in the second half. Pridgen’s 19 rebounds matched Stony Brook’s
Frankie Policelli for the most by a CAA player this season.
Charleston 88, Elon 66
Charleston overcame an early battle from Elon to earn its 26
th win of the year – two more than any other team in the nation. Charleston (26-3, 14-2) trailed 20-19 with 7:32 to go in the first half before ripping off a 25-8 stretch fueled by five three-pointers to take control of the contest. The Cougars would make 18 threes as a team, the most by a CAA squad this season and the highest total in a league game since Hofstra drained 20 against James Madison on Feb. 29, 2020. Five Charleston players were in double figures in a balanced effort, led by 15 from
Reyne Smith. Elon (7-21, 5-10), which entered the day having won five of its last six, was led by a game-high 25 points from
Torrence Watson.
Towson 95, Delaware 72
Towson shot 16-for-22 from three and used a 31-6 run in the first half to control through most of the Tigers’ 18
th win of the season.
Nicolas Timberlake led the way with 29 points for Towson (18-10, 10-5) with an 11-for-15 shooting performance and 7-for-10 from distance. Towson shot 63% overall and 73% from three to score their most points since tallying 95 at James Madison in last year’s regular season finale.
Cam Holden notched seven rebounds and 11 assists to contribute to Towson’s effort. Four players were in double figures for Delaware (13-15, 5-10), led by 15 points each from
Cavan Reilly and
Christian Ray.
Hofstra 73, Hampton 43
Hofstra limited Hampton to 23% shooting to remain in a first-place tie atop the CAA. Hofstra (21-8, 14-2) pushed its winning streak to nine with
Aaron Estrada leading the way in a 21-point night and
Jaquan Carlos contributing another all-around performance with 10 rebounds and eight assists. Hofstra tallied 40 points in the paint while limiting Hampton (6-22, 3-12) to eight.
Jordan Nesbitt led the Pirates with 19 points. Hofstra reached 14 conference wins for the seventh time as a CAA member and third in the last four full seasons.
