#CAAHoops WBB Recap – Feb. 17 – CAA Chaos Continues; Friday’s Six Games All Decided in the Fourth

RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 17, 2023) – The chaos in CAA Women’s Basketball continued Friday night as all six games were decided in the fourth quarter. Only two teams that entered the final quarter with the lead emerged as winners. Northeastern earned the biggest win, knocking Drexel off on its home court for the first time this season. In addition, Stony Brook, Towson, Delaware and Hampton earned road wins, while Elon was the lone team to defend home court. With the results, the top four teams in the conference standings are separated by half a game, including a three-way tie for second place at 9-4. Despite a setback on Friday, William & Mary (9-5) is just one back of first place, currently sitting fifth.
Northeastern 71, Drexel 63 | Box Score
Northeastern defeated Drexel 71-63 on Friday night to earn its first win against the Dragons since 2016 and hand them their first loss at home this season. It was a tale of two quarters in the second half. Trailing by five, Drexel came out of the break red-hot, shooting 62.5 percent (10-16) in the third quarter. The Dragons outscored the Huskies 27-12 in the frame and took a 54-44 lead into the fourth. However, Northeastern would have the last laugh, catching fire in the fourth. The Huskies shot 75.0 percent (9-12) from the floor and knocked down 7-of-9 attempts from the free throw line as Northeastern outmatched Drexel 27-10 over the final 10 minutes of regulation. Derin Erdogan paced Northeastern with 21 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, and tallied a season-high eight assists. Deja Bristol added a career-high 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting with a team-high six rebounds. For Drexel, Keishana Washington scored a game-high 33 points, marking her 10th game this season with 30 or more, while Kylie Lavelle added 12 points, all in the second half.
Towson 66, William & Mary 59 | Box Score
Towson knocked off a red-hot William & Mary squad 66-59 on Friday night to secure the season sweep over the Tribe. It was a game of runs that ended with a big fourth quarter from the Tigers, propelling Towson over William & Mary. The Tribe took a 49-47 lead into the fourth quarter after outscoring Towson 20-14 in the third. However, the Tigers shot 70.0 percent (7-10) from the floor in the final frame and held the Tribe to 18.8 percent (3-16) shooting as Towson outmatched William & Mary 19-10 in the fourth. The Tigers opened the fourth on an 11-0 run and gained a 58-49 advantage midway through the quarter. William & Mary cut the deficit to two with 2:40 remaining, but Towson scored seven of the final eight points in the contest. The Tribe jumped out to an early lead, outscoring Towson 24-13 in the first, but the Tigers responded by holding the Tribe to five points in the second quarter, outscoring them by 15 en route to a halftime lead. Patricia Anumgba went 7-for-9 from the floor with a career-high 17 points to lead Towson. Quinzia Fulmore added 15 points, while Kylie Kornegay-Lucas recorded her fourth double-double this season with 10 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Sydney Wagner led all scorers with 20 points, and Riley Casey chipped in 16 for the Tribe.
Stony Brook 82, Charleston 75 | Box Score
Stony Brook won its second straight game, defeating Charleston 82-75 to earn the season sweep over the Cougars. The Seawolves outscored the Cougars 49-33 in the second half, including 22-15 in the fourth, emerging victoriously. Stony Brook erased a nine-point halftime deficit in the third by outscoring Charleston 27-18 in the frame, thanks in part to a 15-2 run over four minutes of game time. Tied at 60 entering the fourth, Stony Brook used an 8-0 run two and a half minutes into the frame to create separation and outpaced the Cougars 22-15 in the final frame. Annie Warren poured in a season-high 30 points to lead the Seawolves, including a 7-for-11 night from behind the arc. Warren, Stony Brook’s all-time leader in three-point field goals, become the first player in program history with over 200 three-pointers with the performance. Kelis Corley went 4-for-4 from three-point range, adding a career-high 12 points off the bench, and Shamarla King was 4-of-5 from deep, tallying 16 points and nine rebounds. Jada Logan and Anika McGarity picked up where they left off on Sunday, combining for 44 points, Logan scoring a team-high 27 and McGarity chipping in 17.
Elon 57, Monmouth 48 | Box Score
Elon edged Monmouth 57-48 in a defensive battle, and the Phoenix won its third game in the past four tries. Elon led for over 30 minutes in the contest, despite Monmouth keeping the deficit within single digits for the majority of the night. The Phoenix defense limited the Hawks to 31.5 percent (17-54) shooting for the game and held Monmouth under 15 points in all four quarters. The Phoenix built a six-point lead at the break before extending it to nine after three quarters. Monmouth pulled within four points with 3:54 remaining in the fourth before Elon put the game out of reach with a 7-0 run, gaining its largest lead of the night with 25 seconds left in the contest. Lenaejha Evans scored a game-high 17 points and added six boards. Evonna McGill contributed 14 points and five rebounds, while Raven Preston tallied 11 points and pulled down a game-high eight boards.
Hampton 63, UNCW 53 | Box Score
Hampton overcame a slow start to earn a season sweep over UNCW with a 63-50 road win on Friday night. After scoring just 20 points in the first half, the Lady Pirates outscored the Seahawks 43-26 in the second half to erase a seven-point halftime deficit. Hampton used an 11-0 run to take a three-point lead four minutes into the third quarter. The Lady Pirates scored six of the final seven points in the frame to take a 43-38 lead into the fourth quarter after outscoring UNCW 23-11 in the third. Hampton kept its foot on the gas, extending its lead to as many as 15 before pulling out the double-digit victory. Nylah Young had a game-high 20 points and a team-best nine rebounds to lead Hampton. Dlayla Chakolis and Jemany Mapp also reached double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively. McCall King paced UNCW with a career-high 12 points, while Evan Miller 10 points for the Seahawks.
Delaware 65, Hofstra 54 | Box Score
Delaware returned to the win column following a 65-54 victory over Hofstra Thursday night as the Blue Hens earned a season sweep over the Pride. Delaware used a big second half, outscoring Hofstra 37-25 over the final 20 minutes, including 17-9 in the fourth quarter. The Blue Hens trailed by one at halftime before shooting 7-of-12 in the third quarter to gain a 48-45 advantage at the end of the period. The Pride pulled with one, 15 seconds in the fourth quarter, which sparked a 10-0 Blue Hen run that pushed the game out of reach. Klarke Sconiers led Delaware with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench. Nakiya Mays-Prince added 13 points and six assists as Delaware outscored the Pride 32-20 in bench points. Makayla Pippin added 12 points, and Tara Cousin contributed 10, each pulling down seven rebounds to round out the Blue Hens in double figures. Sorelle Ineza paced Hofstra with 17 points, marking her sixth consecutive game in double figures.
